“A Most Violent Year,” an ex-trucker’s struggle to keep his home heating oil delivery company alive amid truck hijackings and an investigation, opened in theaters Dec. 31.

New York City business owner Abel Morales (Oscar Issac) is weathering 1981, one of the city’s worst crime years. Police offer little help as competitors steal loaded trucks and the Teamsters union urges arming the drivers. Meanwhile, the city’s district attorney is investigating Morales’ company for malfeasance.

Jessica Chastain plays Morales’ wife Anna, whose gangster father had previously owned their business, while director-writer-actor Albert Brooks plays Morales’ attorney.
