And you thought CA was tough on diesels

With all the fire on owner-operators of diesels coming out of the Golden State, one wouldn’t be unjustified in feeling a little picked on (the skinny on upcoming California deadlines for reefers and trucks serving ports you can find here). But perhaps you can take heart (or bile, depending on how charitable you’re feeling today) from this latest announcement from the California Air Resources Board, the state’s arbiter of emissions regulations. Wednesday CARB said it had fined a company $240,000 for selling Chinese-made two-stroke engine-powered blenders (pictured) for use for outdoor beverage mixing.

“Sales of these unauthorized blenders, popular for mixing beverages at tail-gate parties and other outdoor events, occurred in 2007,” the agency said. “These types of illegal uncertified engines from China can produce emissions 10 times as high as those of compliant certified engines approved for use in California.”

“Gasoline-powered blenders may be this year’s tailgate sensation, but drinkers should not be polluting our air while having a good time,” said ARB Chairman Mary D. Nichols, not elaborating on the various other kinds of effluvia one might expect from a tailgate party.
