INTERNATIONAL OFFERS EXTENDED CABS, NEW MEDIUM-DUTY MODEL

International launched the 4200 model, a medium-duty truck powered by a 215-hp engine. International also now offers extended cabs on its 4200, 4300 and 4400 models as well as all 7000 Series and 8500 tractors.

The 4200 is more maneuverable because of its 50-degree wheel cut and more maintenance-friendly because of its multiplexed electrical system, the company says. The truck is powered by the International VT 365 diesel engine, which features a four-valve, six-liter displacement. The engine includes a new Electro-Hydraulic Generation 2 fuel system that works in tandem with the Electronic Variable Response Turbocharger to improve engine response and efficiency. The truck also features Allison Intuitive Shift controllers, which integrate engine and transmission to adjust for different loads and driving conditions.

OWNER OPERATOR/FLEET SOFTWARE

The owner-operator version has been improved so it doesn’t require the user to relearn the flow of data entry or re-enter past trip data each time it is used. It now includes a cents-per-mile profit-and-loss breakout for each trip.

VOLVO ADDS INTEGRATED SATELLITE SYSTEM

Volvo Trucks North America launched a fully integrated vehicle satellite communications system called Volvo Link, which works both as a truck locator and as a two-way communicator between driver and terminal virtually anywhere, the company says.

Volvo Link is “as affordable as cellular technology, but with the coverage of satellite technology,” says Susan Alt, vice president of marketing.

Sending messages on the new system requires no keyboard. Instead, the driver uses the windshield wiper control arm on the steering column to scroll through a list of standardized messages or to create customized messages. The text is displayed on Volvo’s in-dash Driver Message Center, a feature on Volvo trucks since model year 2000.

The satellite antenna and modem are integrated into the truck and hidden from sight, which enhances security, the company says.

IMPROVED WHEEL SEAL

Chicago Rawhide’s new Scotseal Plus XL features HNBR butadiene rubber, which extends seal life by resisting the higher wheel-end temperatures found in trucking today. The material also has strong resistance to abrasives. The seal has four internal sealing lips to keep contaminants out and lube in. It is available as part of a program offering warranties for up to three years or 300,000 miles.

LIGHTWEIGHT SUSPENSION

Hendrickson has introduced a primary air-ride trailer suspension system, the INTRAAX AANT 23K. The suspension’s tapered-beam technology allowed the company to trim more than 35 pounds from an already light integrated suspension, axle and brake system. The suspension has a capacity of 23,000 pounds in ride heights from 131/2 inches to 17 inches. A narrower hanger design allows installation directly to trailer frames with flanges as narrow as 4 inches wide, which can result in further weight savings.

120-VOLT C6AB POWER

Phillips & Temro Industries has introduced Cab Power, a cab electrical system that allows drivers to use household appliances in their cabs without idling, thereby reducing fuel consumption and engine wear. The system distributes 120-volt current to electrical outlets mounted in cab and sleeper, allowing drivers to power space heaters, air conditioning systems, microwave ovens, refrigerators, toaster ovens, computers and printers. The system can be powered directly from shore power or via a DC/AC inverter connected to the truck’s battery.

REEFER UNIT

The new Thermo King Super II-190 trailer refrigeration unit comes standard with the Whisper-Quiet engine, so when making inner-city deliveries the equipment will conform to local noise ordinances. Users can add an electronic throttling valve to reduce the load on the engine resulting from driving the compressor, saving 5 percent to 15 percent in fuel. The Whisper-Quiet engine feature consists of changes to the exhaust and intake systems, plus additional gaskets and acoustic foam. Other features include silicone coolant hoses, 12,000-hour service interval coolant, and EMI 3000, an option that extends maintenance intervals from 1,500 to 3,000 hours.
