Truckers entering Arizona from California, Utah and New Mexico may soon be able to bypass the state’s port of entry weigh stations.

The Arizona Department of Transportation will add Drivewyze Preclear roadway sensors over the next month at seven locations to check the weight and registration of trucks entering the state. The new bypass locations will be:

  • I-8 in Yuma
  • I-10 in Ehrenberg near the California line
  • I-10 in San Simon near the New Mexico line
  • I-15 in St. George, Utah, just north of the Arizona-Utah line
  • I-40 in Topock near the California line
  • I-40 in Sanders near the New Mexico line
  • State Route 68 and U.S. 93 in Kingman

Truckers will be required to use the Drivewyze mobile app or ELD app to get a bypass. ADOT says some trucks will be selected at random for inspections, and registered trucks that are overweight or have paperwork issues will be instructed to stop for inspection.

“If we pull over every truck, it causes unnecessary delays for drivers and companies that have complied with Arizona’s regulations,” says Tim Lane, director of ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division. “This system will allow us to increase enforcement in the cases where we need to do that.”

ADOT has used a similar system at the McGuireville rest area on I-17, the Canoa Ranch rest area on I-19 and the Sacaton rest area on I-10 to weigh trucks and check registration status.
