Atlas Drivers Recognized

The American Moving and Storage Association recently honored three Atlas Van Lines drivers at its 2001 Management and Tradeshow Conference.

Bob Short, who drives for Alexander’s Moving & Storage of Tustin, Calif., received the Super Van Operator Lifetime Achievement Special Runner-Up Award. Short has driven for Alexander’s since 1972, has 1.7 million accident-free miles and hasn’t received a moving citation in the past 5 years. He previously received the Atlas Safe Driving Award and was named to the Atlas Scroll of Honor. Short delivers toys to needy children each year.

Robert Warren, who drives for Bean Moving & Storage in Hattiesburg, Miss., received the Super Van Operator Special Runner-Up Award. He’s logged more than 360,000 accident-free miles with no moving violations in the past 5 years. Warren was named in the top 10 percent of Atlas Van Lines drivers since 1991 and last year received the van line’s Safe Driver Award for 250,000 accident-free miles.

Gus Howard received the Super Van Operator – Special Commodities Special Runner-Up Award. He’s driven for Atlas’ Specialized Transportation Division since 1997 and has logged more than 565,000 miles in the past 5 years with no preventable accidents or moving violations. Howard has received safe driver awards since his first 100,000 miles, and he now has more than 2.5 million miles of safe driving.


Covenant Receives Award
Home Depot honored Covenant Transport with the Truckload Carrier of the Year, Silver Award. Covenant received the award because of its performance in on-time delivery and pick-up, EDI response time, sales and operations interaction with Home Depot, and commitment to customer service.


Heartland Drivers of the Month
Heartland Express, Inc. of Coralville, Iowa, named its Drivers of the Month for July. The Company Drivers of the Month were Robert Wesolowski, Michael Fisher, Robert Horton and Gary Wells. The Owner-Operators of the Month were Roger Melton, James Kochheiser, William Meade and Jimmy Campbell.

PTL Driver of the Month
Paschall Truck Lines named George Capron its June Driver of the Month. This is Capron’s third Driver of the Month award. He enjoys taking his children on the road with him, and said he’s still with PTL in part because of the amount of time he’s at home, and the support of company employees.


CF Drivers Exceed 3 Million Safe Miles
Consolidated Freightways honored four drivers who exceeded 3 million accident-free miles. James Hatfield, Robert Shearer, Paul Ririe and Desmond Ricks were honored in July at a ceremony in Salt Lake City.

Hatfield has driven for CF since 1966. He and his wife Mary live in Draper, Utah, and have seven children and nine grandchildren. Shearer has driven for CF since 1967 and lives in West Valley City, Utah, with his wife Donna and their son. Ririe has driven for CF since 1971. He and his wife Phyllis live in Salt Lake City and have seven children. Ricks has driven for CF since 1972 and lives with his wife Helen in Salt Lake City. They have five children and 16 grandchildren.

During the ceremony, four CF tractors were dedicated in honor of the drivers. Decals describing the achievement of each driver were affixed to the sides of each tractor, and an honorary bronze dash plaque was installed in each cab.


Werner Drivers Honored for Service
Werner Enterprises of Omaha, Neb., recently honored eight drivers for driving 1 million accident-free miles. The drivers, and their number of years with Werner, are:

  • Loren “Ed” Abell, 9 years
  • Pete Dinkel, 10 years
  • Richard Fecher, 7 years
  • Donald Hess, 8 years
  • Edward Huff, Jr., 10 years
  • Mike Poffinbarger, 10 years
  • H.E. (Gene) Rosenkoet, 11 years
  • Glenn Wood, 10 years

Werner also honored six additional company drivers who have driven more than 16 million accident-free miles combined. Their years of service and accident-free miles are:

  • James Armstrong, 24 years, 2.5 million miles
  • Bill Dunson, 22 years, 2.3 million miles
  • Charlie Endorf, 25 years, 3.5 million miles
  • Wayne Johnson, 21 years, 3 million miles
  • Darrell Jones, 23 years, 2.5 million miles
  • Gerald Trent, 21 years, 2.5 million miles


U.S. Xpress Gets Carrier Award
Moen, a plumbing products manufacturer, honored U.S. Xpress with its 2000 Partners in Quality award, designating it the Truckload Carrier of the Year. The company received the award in part because of its 100 percent on-time delivery record.

U.S. Xpress has served Moen for more than a decade. Jeffrey Wardeberg, executive vice president of sales and marketing at U.S. Xpress, said, “Service is the cornerstone of our business at U.S. Xpress, and this award from Moen is a great compliment to the kind of teamwork that we have at U.S. Xpress. I really appreciate the way our drivers and support staff work together as a real team in meeting the needs of our customers.”


CFI Drivers of the Month
CFI of Joplin, Mo., announced its July Drivers of the Month.

Walt Makiej was named Company Driver of the Month. He has driven for CFI since 1996 and lives in Temple, Texas.

Jeannie and Winston Wells were named Company Team of the Month. They began driving for CFI in 1998 and live in Granbury, Texas.

Wayne Wright was named Contractor Driver of the Month. He’s driven for CFI for 5 years and lives in Byars, Okla.

Karl Gray and Will Vargas were named Contractor Team of the Month. Gray has driven for CFI since 1993 and lives in El Paso, Texas. Vargas has driven for CFI since 1994 and lives in Houston.
