Genre: Murder Mystery

Plot: Jesse Stone is the police chief of Paradise, Mass. He is trying to repair a bad marriage while trying to solve the murder of Florence, a promiscuous party girl who socializes with wealthy yachtsmen. Florence’s parents are a wealthy couple who spoil their kids. With wealth, drugs and sex involved, who crossed the line and caused Florence’s death?

What was your favorite moment? When Florence’s twin sisters try to seduce the police chief.

Which character was your favorite? Jesse Stone. Despite many personal problems, he stays focused on the job and leaves work at work.

Does the book have a message or theme? The theme throughout the book is that money without love creates deviant behavior that follows us throughout our lives.

What did you like or dislike? I liked the interaction of Jesse Stone with the town citizens and deputies. Dislikes were constant references to wealth that gave the appearance the author wanted to bring out envy in the listener.

Would you recommend this book to friends? The novel was interesting, but it just does not relate well to middle-class values. If a person wanted to be wealthy, this book would make you glad to be poor.

Narrator’s style: Scott Sowers was good, never bored, and sounded very in touch with the characters.

How would you grade the book? B-

Notables
The Killing Moon – Chuck Hogan

The crack of a handgun shatters the silence of a warm summer night. A notorious local felon and former child magician vanishes. A corrupt police force applies a stranglehold to a failing town. An ailing old man hatches a last-ditch plan to save the police department he once headed and the community he still loves. An outsider arrives, bearing a simple recipe for death that could destroy them all.

Donald Maddox has returned to his fading hometown, Black Falls, after 15 years. Maddox has no law-enforcement background – indeed, no background at all – but finds himself employed as an auxiliary patrolman for the brutal local police force. When a sadistic murder shatters the isolation of this forgotten place, both the local cops and Maddox appear to have something to hide. As the tightly-wound mystery of Maddox’s past begins to unravel, he finds himself ensnared in a conspiracy that ultimately threatens his life – and the lives of those nearest him.

Halsey’s Typhoon – Bob Drury and Tom Clavin
December 1944, the Pacific Theater. General Douglas MacArthur has vowed to return to the Phillippines. He will need the help of Admiral William “Bull” Halsey’s Pacific Fleet. But at the height of the invasion, Halsey’s ships are blindsided by a typhoon of unprecedented strength and scope. Battleships are tossed like toys, fighter planes are blown off carriers, destroyers are capsized, and hundreds of sailors are swept into the roiling, shark-infested sea.

Based on documents that have been declassified after 60 years and scores of firsthand accounts from survivors, the story is a true tale of courage and survival against impossible odds – and one of the finest untold World War II sagas of our time.
