Genre: Thriller

Plot: Former bounty hunter Clark Sealy and his wife Jessica – now David and Stacy Hoffman – live in Atlanta under the Witness Protection Program. Four years earlier, Chinese mathematician Professor Warren Dagon created a coded algorithm that the Chinese mafia wanted, but then he disappeared somewhere in Nevada. The mafia kidnapped Jessica and told Clark that unless he found and delivered Professor Dagon to them, they would kill Jessica in 48 hours. Clark managed the feat, won the battle and sent four members of the Chinese mafia to prison.

Now the Hoffmans are in trouble again. The mafia has found them and the U.S. federals say they can’t help this time. The couple turns to three law students, Jamey Brock, Isaiah Hayward and Wellington Farnsworth, for assistance, but then Jamey is kidnapped. Should David give the algorithm that could expose all national secrets to the mafia or give it to his own government, which would enable them to spy on fellow Americans, to save Jamey’s life and possibly his own?

Which character was your favorite? Isaiah Hayward. In the beginning, he was pompous and self-centered, but he became a better person and someday would be a good attorney.

What was the book’s message or theme? Sometimes we can’t even trust our own government.

What did you like or dislike? It was action packed, but I am not much into math. It was refreshing to have law students instead of just another lawyer story.

Would you recommend this book to friends? Not really, just because the math parts confused me.

Narrator’s style: Adam Verner is very articulate, speaks clearly and changes his voice for the different characters.

How would you grade the book? C

Clapton – Eric Clapton

With striking intimacy and candor, Eric Clapton tells the story of his eventful and inspiring life. Born illegitimate in 1945 and raised by his grandparents, Eric never knew his father and, until the age of 9, believed his actual mother to be his sister. In his early teens his solace was the guitar.

With the formation of Cream, the world’s first supergroup, he became a worldwide superstar. During the decades that followed, he would go on to play as a guest with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and longtime friend George Harrison. He would overcome despair, self-imposed seclusion, drug addiction and alcoholism. He would become a father.

But just as his life was coming together, he was struck by a terrible blow: His beloved 4-year-old son Conor died in a freak accident. At an earlier time Eric might have coped with this tragedy by fleeing into a haze of addiction. Now a much stronger man, he took refuge in music. Clapton is the story of a survivor, a man who has achieved the pinnacle of success despite extraordinary demons.
