August 21: Fort Bridger, Wyoming

Somewhat of a ghost town today, Fort Bridger, Wyo. was originally a major stop on the Oregon Trail. Founded in 1842 by Jim Bridger as a trading post, the fort was bought by the Church of Latter Day Saints in the 1850s for use of Mormons heading west. The fort was the site of a later battle between the church and the United States government. The fort was burned and subsequently rebuilt and occupied by U.S. forces. Buildings built during the army occupation still stand today.

When the fort was rebuilt in 1858, the army used it to control Indian uprisings. During the 1860s it was a stage stop for the Pony Express and overland stage routes.
