August 22: Boise, Idaho

Boise is the capital and largest city in Idaho. With a population of 181,711, the city is the hub of economic activity in the state. Even though Lewis and Clark expedition crossed into Idaho first in 1805, it was 1860 that the state’s first town, Franklin, was established. Idaho, part of the Northwest Territory and later both Oregon and Washington Territories, became a territory of its own in 1863. It was admitted as a state in 1890.

Fort Boise was established in 1834 to help cope with Native American uprisings and protect fur traders and eventually settlers moving west on the Oregon Trail.

Located along the Boise River and nestled against foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boise offers activities like skiing, biking and boating. The area is home to deserts, rivers, mountains and lakes, and international companies like Simplot Corporation, Boise Cascade, Albertsons, Micron Technology and Hewlett-Packard are headquartered there.

The city is also the home of Boise State University, the state’s largest university with an enrollment of more than 15,000 students.
