Though payroll employment in the for-hire trucking industry has been mostly steadily been increasing, May bucked the trend, shedding 700 trucking jobs.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that for-hire trucking companies added 5,000 payroll jobs in the month, pushing the total number of trucking payroll employment to 1.375 million jobs.

For-hire trucking companies added 700 payroll jobs in September on a seasonally adjusted basis as the overall U.S. economy added 114,000 nonfarm jobs.
The national average retail diesel price rose 6.1 cents to $4.026 a gallon during the week ended Aug. 20.
For-hire trucking companies added 3,100 payroll jobs in July as the overall U.S. economy added a net of 163,000 nonfarm jobs.
For-hire carriers added 2,000 payroll jobs in June, but that was coupled with a 2,600-job downward revision in initial May figures.
