Associates of Averitt Express donated $350,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, marking the 17th annual donation. The gift was collected from Averitt associates during 2009.
Averitt has donated more than $5 million to charities, including St. Jude, since 1986, when an outreach for children’s health was created.
Physicians and scientists at St. Jude have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.
In September 2007, Averitt made an endowment of $1.5 million for the initial construction of the St. Jude Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinic, through which most St. Jude patients are treated.
