Book: U.S. mistakes in Iraq have been fatal to truckers

Fatal mismanagement of civilian truckers – “the unsung heroes of the war” – is charged in the new book Blood Money: Wasted Billions, Lost Lives, and Corporate Greed in Iraq (Little, Brown, $24.99).

Fatal mismanagement of civilian truckers – “the unsung heroes of the war” – is charged in the new book Blood Money: Wasted Billions, Lost Lives, and Corporate Greed in Iraq (Little, Brown, $24.99). In a chapter on the April 9, 2004, convoy attack that killed 10 Americans, author T. Christian Miller says the truckers were routed without maps or armor into a battle the 1st Cavalry had been fighting for two days. Yet Miller calls Iraq “perhaps the only place where a truck driver could still earn enough money to realize the American dream.”

A BIG RIG! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Two horror clichés meet in “Pick Me Up,” a new-to-DVD episode of Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” series. A psycho trucker named Wheeler and a psycho hitchhiker named Walker fight over who gets to kill the lone survivor of a bus breakdown. And a psycho named Writer is back in Hollywood, cranking out movie scripts.

OPRY COLLECTION INCLUDES TRUCKING CLASSICS
The vintage 1960s Ryman Auditorium performances on Grand Ole Opry Live Classics: Hit the Road include Dave Dudley’s “Six Days on the Road,” Del Reeves’ “Girl on a Billboard” and Hank Snow’s “I’ve Been Everywhere.” Dudley sounds as if he’s on the “little white pills” he sings about, but Snow’s rapid-fire tongue-twister of city names earns applause before his number is halfway through. The CD is $5.99 and available at Cracker Barrel stores.
