Bill Bowering named TCA Highway Angel

Updated Aug 17, 2010

Bill Bowering, a driver for H.O. Wolding Inc. was named a Truckload Carriers Association Highway Angel for comforting people in a deadly rollover car accident.

According to Bowering, on April 28 he was driving on 1-57 near Mattoon, Ill., when a vehicle with three young women in it, passed him on the left hand side. As it reentered the right lane, the driver hit a pothole, apparently overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle, which flipped over and slid into the ditch.

When Bowering arrived, he found two women climbing out of the wreck with another woman trapped inside. He took her pulse but could not find one. He also checked for signs of breathing, but there were none.

When a paramedic took over, Bowering consoled the other women until authorities arrived.

“I was too late. I couldn’t do anything about the driver,” Bowering said.

Bowering received a Highway Angel lapel pin, certificate and patch for his good deed.
