Boyd Bros. Transportation Inc. celebrated National Truck Drivers Appreciation Week by honoring two of its drivers who both recently logged two million consecutive safe miles with the flatbed carrier.

Virgil Shell of Columbia, S.C., and Dennis Howard of Goodwater, Ala., were recognized at a luncheon and presented with cash bonuses and gifts at Boyd Bros.’ terminal in Birmingham, Ala.

“Everything at Boyd Bros. is about safety,” said Howard. “Training requirements are tough, and we get daily alerts and reminders so we are always thinking about things that can happen and remembering to keep safety first.”

“When you hear about one-, two- and three-million-mile drivers and talk to the driver managers and the people that work with them, the character of those drivers are very similar,” says Richard Bailey, company president. “They work hard, they’re disciplined, and they’re patient. I’m proud to work with people like these two drivers.”

In the past year, Boyd Bros. was recognized by the Truckload Carriers Association as the 2010 Best Fleet to Drive For, and finished in the top three in the American Trucking Associations’ safety program for the flatbed division.

“Drivers like Dennis and Virgil are a big reason why the trucking industry represents 9 percent of the gross domestic product,” said Gail Cooper, CEO. “Their commitment to going about their job with the highest priority on safety allows us to provide a needed service while making the roads increasingly safe.”
