California deadline for ordering DPFs for reefer units is Oct. 31

The California Air Resources Board reminds 2009 model reefer unit owners Monday, Oct. 31 is the deadline for ordering Level 3 verified diesel particulate filters to retrofit reefer engines.

California regulations requires TRU engines and TRU generator sets engines to meet in-use performance standards by Dec. 31 to operate in the state. Replacement engines are no longer a compliance option because replacements must be cleaner than the engine removed. CARB says there are no replacement engines that fit and function cleaner than the ‘09 engine.

The state will not extend the compliance deadline for ordering verified diesel emissions control strategies, such as Level 3 DPFs, if placed after Monday and not installed this year.

However, owners who order by Monday may qualify for compliance extensions if delivery or installation delays prevent meeting the end-of-year deadline. Receiving this requires owners to register TRUs in CARB’s Equipment Registration system, then apply for an extension with the necessary documentation to the board by Dec. 31.
