ISX 12-liter for regional, vocational hauls

The ISX12, built for regional hauls and vocational and specialty applications, uses components of the big-bore ISX15 to offer more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, the ISX11.9, the company says. An enhanced cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, a single variable-geometry turbocharger, the proprietary XPI fuel system and Cummins aftertreatment system with selective catalytic reduction technology are borrowed from the ISX15. The engine is designed for rigorous duty cycles, including dump and mixer trucks and refuse applications. The engine’s horsepower and torque ratings are appropriate for regional haul and daycab operations in Class 8 trucks.

The engine’s standard horsepower ratings range from 310 to 425. Production will begin in March.

Automatic transmission has ‘blended architecture’

Allison Transmission has introduced a 10-speed, fully-automatic, twin-countershaft, range-type transmission: the TC10 TS.

The unit will be marketed for use in daycabs, truckload, regional haul, less-than-truckload, liquid transport, equipment transport and construction,

Todd Dygert, NAFTA-MSS product specialist for the TC10, described the unit as having “blended architecture,” combining characteristics of the twin-countershaft mechanical truck transmission with those of the maker’s existing automatics.

The transmission will have a torque converter with lockup clutch in place of a standard, dry clutch at front. But it will have helical gears integrated with a twin-countershaft layout for five forward speeds and the reverse gears in the main box, as well as a two-speed planetary range box at the rear.

Also, the torque converter will be used only for launch, locking up before the shift to second gear under nearly all circumstances, to save fuel.

Production will start Oct. 1, 2012, and will expand in 2013. Prototypes are being tested in fleet operations. Final warranty terms are still to be determined, but a 5-year, 750,000- mile warranty is the target.

Cat, Navistar team up to build cabover

A cabover-engine vocational truck will soon be produced and sold globally in the ongoing collaboration between Caterpillar Inc. and Navistar International Corp., the companies announced.

Cat and Navistar also have an agreement to produce Caterpillar heavy-duty vocational trucks for North America. Customer deliveries have started for the Cat CT660 vocational truck, which was unveiled in March.

Under terms of this new relationship, NC2, the company created and formerly co-owned by both manufacturers, will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navistar. Also, through a new brand licensing agreement, both International and Caterpillar branded trucks will continue to be distributed through both International and Caterpillar dealers outside of the United States.

XE13 equips VN 670 for smooth ride

In September, I took an XE13-equipped Volvo VN 670 on a six-hour test, highlighted by a climb up Fancy Gap, a 2,000-foot mountain on I-77 near the North Carolina-Virginia border.

For most of the climb, I was able to hang out in the middle lane, passing other, lugging rigs.

Because the XE13’s drivetrain is fully integrated, each system knows precisely what demands are being placed on each component. This information is updated thousands of times per second. The light-speed communication network allows the tractor’s I-Shift transmission to direct the engine to respond to its needs, instead of the other way around.

The result is a smooth ride up and down a mountain in crowded road conditions, while the tractor pulls 77,000 pounds. The system selected 10th gear early in the Fancy Gap climb and held a steady 53 mph to the summit without strain.

The XE13, a combination of Volvo’s I-Shift automated-manual transmission and a D13 Volvo engine with modified software, allows the engine to cruise at 1150 rpm at 65 mph.

The package is rated for up to 80,000 pounds and includes a 425-hp, 1750 lb.-ft.-torque D13. The Volvo I-Shift overdrive transmission comes with a 0.78:1 ratio and a software package that facilitates communication between the integrated powertrain components.

Caterpillar truck goes into production

Caterpillar has begun production of its CT660 vocational truck for the North American market and is shipping units to customers, the company announced.

The truck was developed using the Navistar WorkStar vocational truck as a starting point. Cat trucks will offer only one engine: Navistar’s 2010 EGR-only family of heavy-duty engines, painted yellow and branded as Cat CT11 and CT13. The two companies jointly developed the high-pressure fuel injection system that helps enable Navistar engines to meet EPA 2010 emissions regulations without use of selective catalytic reduction aftertreatment.

During a brief test drive, accleration with the 475 horse CT13 under the hood was peppy and the CX31 provided smooth shifts right on cue. Equally impressive are the truck’s wheel cuts and turning radius.

Cat will offer the CT660 now with either an 11-liter or 13-liter engine, with horsepower ratings ranging from 330 to 475. A 15-liter option is planned with ratings as high as 550-hp. Cat’s Gary Blood says the 475-hp CT13 mated with Cat’s CX31 automated manual transmission delivers power on par with a 15-liter.

Independent sleeper air conditioner

A newer version of a battery-powered auxiliary air-conditioning system is now available from Red Dot. The Sleeping Well Arctic 2000 Plus system operates with the truck’s engine off, burning no fuel and producing no emissions. Caterpillar’s CT660 vocational truck isn’t merely an International Workstar with yellow paint. Caterpillar engineers say their new truck is “essentially new from the frame rails up.”

The CT660 vocational truck is offered with three sizes of Navistar MaxxForce engines.

The set-back axle configuration Class 8 truck goes into production this month, with deliveries to begin in July.

Caterpillar CT11, CT13 and forthcoming CT15 engines are Navistar MaxxForce engines, with displacements of 11.1, 12.5 and 15.2 liters, respectively. Horsepower ratings range from 330 to 550 and peak torque ratings range from 1,450 to 1,850 lb.-ft.

Cat engineers put their own distinctive stamp on this truck with styling derived from the company’s wheel loader line. They also emphasized cab ergonomics.

The CT660 has a brushed aluminum grille surround. The aerodynamic hood features a sloped design for increased visibility and decreased drag for greater fuel economy.

The truck’s instrument cluster and center stack feature an integrated speedometer/tachometer that can be read through the steering wheel. Cat offers its Cat Link equipment telematics system as standard, with a complimentary three-year subscription on all CT660 trucks. The system gives drivers and fleet managers access to data including fuel economy, hours of operation, vehicle location, maintenance and trouble-shooting information. Other in-cab features include a premium sound insulation system to reduce road noise and a new HVAC system.

MaxxForce 15

The new MaxxForce 15 diesel is available with up to 550 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. Peak torque is reached at 1,000 rpm and holds steady to 1,600 rpm, the company says. This reduces gear shifts in uphill terrain and allows for shifting at lower speeds when accelerating.

Navistar’s new 15-liter engine, designed for off-highway applications, uses exhaust gas recirculation to meet emissions requirements.

Freightliner introduces Severe Duty trucks

Freightliner has released a new family of work trucks – the Severe Duty line – aimed at Class 7 and 8 vocational markets.

Freightliner’s new Severe Duty line of Class 7 and 8 vocational trucks replaces Daimler’s Sterling line and features a new styling designed to differentiate the truck from Freightliner’s long-haul products.

The SD series will comprise 108- and 114-in. bumper-to-back of cab configurations — both with set-back axle positions as well as a Coronado SD version for extreme heavy-hauls and severe off-road applications. The 108SD features a 42-in. set-back axle with rating from 10,000 to 20,000 pounds and single and tandem rear axle options from 21,000 to 46,000 pounds. Kenworth improves T600 specs

Kenworth Truck Co.’s new T660 regional hauler configuration offers shorter wheelbases, tighter chassis packaging, enhanced maneuverability and weight savings, the company says. The new T660 configuration removes the standard under-cab chassis fairing and replaces it with a cab-mounted extension of the hood fender. This allows larger diameter 24.5-in. and 28.5-in. fuel tanks to fit under the cab.

The truck maker will also offer a new line of seats exclusively for the T700. The new Kenworth GT701, GT702, and GT703 seats offer an advanced air suspension system that can automatically adjust to the driver’s weight. Dana’s new Diamond Series aluminum driveshaft joins Spicer steel U-joints to a new one-piece aluminum shaft, offering a driveshaft that is as strong as conventional designs, yet weighs up to 40 percent less, the company says.

Aimed at heavy-duty commercial trucks using two-piece steel driveshafts of 7.5 feet, the one-piece design — without the center bearing and one universal joint — reduces component wear, the company says. Collision mitigation system

Bendix Wingman Advanced, a collision mitigation technology, uses a radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle. The system delivers warnings and active interventions to help drivers avoid rear-end collisions. A stationary object alert system notifies drivers of metallic objects in the vehicle’s path, allowing three seconds for driver response before impact.

The adaptive cruise control with braking feature can actively intervene to help maintain a safe following distance behind a forward vehicle by reducing throttle, engaging the engine retarder or applying the foundation brakes, the company says. Ultracapacitor for truck starts

Maxwell Technologies will market later this year an ultracapacitor that will replace one or two truck batteries and help start a truck. The unit is dry, maintenance-free, saves weight and provides protection against no-starts, the company says. It stores electricity on metal plates rather than through a chemical process used in batteries, making it less sensitive to cold temperatures. Minimal degradation occurs as the temperature drops from 100 degrees to below zero, the company says.

The unit offers less resistance to current flow than a battery, enabling it to crank the engine substantially faster. The unit stores enough energy for three potent cranking cycles of about four seconds each.

New valve for refrigeration units

The Electronic Throttling Valve is designed to reduce fuel costs, extend maintenance intervals and improve temperature control performance on Thermo King’s T-series single-temp truck units with scroll compressors. These units include the T-600, T-800 and T-1000. The valve feeds its position back to the electronic controller, and can be set to more than 700 positions to account for weather and load. In addition to fuel and maintenance savings, the box temperature recovers more quickly after a lengthy door opening, the company says.

Trailer aerodynamics parts manufacturer ATDynamics’ TrailerTail Nano is a smaller version of the company’s rear-drag-reducing trailer add-on. The Nano is roughly half the size of the original TrailerTail, is designed for use in inner-city operations and pup-trailer fleets, and complies with Canadian regulatory requirements, the company says. It extends the length of the trailer about 2 feet, half that of the standard TrailerTail. The Nano will be available this fall.

Mobile system includes EOBR

Qualcomm’s new Mobile Computing Platform 50 is a lower-priced alternative for small and medium-sized fleets, the company says. The MCP50, to be available this fall, includes an electronic on-board recording system compliant with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations; Critical Event Reporting with dashboards to track and improve driving performance; On-board navigation; and Analytics Manager to provide information on operational performance in dashboards, graphs and tables.

On-board scale

Air-Weigh’s Quickload on-board scale is designed to work in harsh climates and applications. Quickload can be mounted in various positions on the trailer exterior and installed in about 20 minutes.

New features include an icon-based touch screen; multiple display, alarm and program settings; and built-in warning weight and overweight alarm LEDs that shine forward, rearward and outward. Additional features include a built-in battery for untethered operation and an industry standard data interface that can be set to J1939 or RS485 protocols. The new scale will sell for $485, and can pay for itself in about 20 uses, the company says.
