Cobra 8000 Pro HDThe 8000 Pro HD (7-inch screen, pictured) and 6000 Pro HD (5-inch) GPS navigation units have been designed from the ground up specifically to meet the demands of today’s professional driver. While the HD stands for “high-definition,” a reference to the high-resolution touch screens of the user interface, it might also stand for “heavy duty,” said company reps, speaking at the Cobra Electronics booth (#17084) at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville. Both units include free live and predictive traffic (the latter utilizing historical patterns by time of day for areas without live traffic services) information to help drivers avoid costly traffic delays, as well as free lifetime map updates and lifetime access to the AURA Driving Hazards Database of speed/red-light camera locations, dangerous intersections and known speed traps. Both are likewise packed with additional productivity-enhancing features, truck-optimized route guidance and trucker-friendly points-of-interest provided by TruckDown.

Cobra HomeBase docking softwareAt the show, Cobra is also introducing its new docking software — Cobra HomeBase (home screen pictured) — packaged with the units. When the nav unit is plugged into the USB port on drivers’ Windows or Mac laptops, HomeBase will automatically make the link to the hardware and allow driver downloads of the latest map/AURA  and software updates for nav unit, all free of charge on the new units. The HomeBase also allows drivers to back up the personal data on their Cobra navigation device, including address book information and state mileage logs. Upon first connection, the HomeBase will not only allow drivers to register their Cobra navigation device and download updates, but will also allow them to provide feedback through the “Tell Cobra” feature. Driver feedback will be reviewed by Cobra engineers and incorporated into the company’s continuous improvement process for potential future product enhancements.
