.10/mile? come on, cant’ be right, u sure about that? Been off the road since ’09 and plan on returning next year and wow, looks like I’m in for a change!

  • steve garrett

I’ve been an o/o since 2000 and health issues took me off the road back in ’09, my plans are to return next year and pull containers for 1.20/mile all miles, u seasoned drivers have any advice for a returning owner operator? Looks like it’s not getting better as I figured, so can u still make a decent living?

Why didn’t we used to have these problems with new drivers? I started driving in 1971. Your trainer had about 10 years or more, had been in just about any situation that will happen , and could teach you how to not get in bad situations, and how to get out of the if you did get in that situation. Now they have trainers with 2, 3,4 months of driving experience. That’s it. So there is a very good chance that trainer has never been in winter conditions. But today you go to trucking school to learn how to fill out log books, and not learn how to drive. Then there is that attitude that most new meat in the seat have. They think they know everything and have titles to make them seem more important. You can hear it everyday at the truck stops. And now the government with absolutly no truck experience says that you are unskilled labor and they have to control how you are taught.. What happened to the old guy teaching you? Ohh thats right they can’t yell at you so next time you do it right.

@google-4e1d500edc54dfd6e8d662f2136d9f24:disqus . You have been away from trucking since 2009? have you been keeping up and reading about the change’s that has went on since then? You say your going back in as a O/O hauling cantainers @1.20pm all miles, have you ever haul containers befor? with EOBR,CSA score, ect ect. I was a I/C with a big company after driving 33 years i got out of it in March 2011 and I will not go back. I’m not saying you should not return, I’m just asking have you been keeping up with whats going on . I don’t drive any more but I’m still keeping up with it. Good Luck my friend.

The guys who ask the questions from the audience are wearing trucker “costumes”..they are probably COPS..dressed up to look like Haggard Old truckers…how funny…

I wouldn’t even waste my time working for that rate. I’d look for a carrier that paid a percentage of the haul and whose o/o’s are driving nice, well maintained equipment and then ask a bunch of questions of the contractors to see if they’re happy and making good money. Try to estimate what your costs will be and make sure you can cover those with some to spare and don’t even think about starting out again if you can’t either have a reserve of at least $5-10,000 or a line of credit for that amount. You might find good, somewhat local work from an over the road company like Mercer or Landstar if they have a good agent near you. Ask a lot of questions and find an old guy who knows the ropes and is happy with the company to give you tips, then your odds won’t be quite so stacked against you.

I may try to get to one of those meetings. I haven’t seen how going to a driving school has much impact on the quality of driver. If the guy can pass the CDL tests and handle a rig, he ends up getting most of his substantive training once he’s on the job. I never went to truck driving school and I was better prepared than many drivers I have trained who did. I think adding bureaucratic obstacles will only hurt the industry. They already have standards and tests and if you meet those standards and can pass the tests why should you have to spend money for a professional to teach you? I have trained several drivers who wasted their money on the schools and I’m not sure what they actually got from the school other than a little book learning and maybe a basic ability to get the truck moving. I’m sure there are good schools and instructors, but I don’t think making them the only option will do anything to increase safety. Many kids who grew up working around heavy farm machinery and just took the farm truck or a borrowed one down to take the test are in my humble opinion better qualified drivers from day one than people who paid for their training.
