Commercial vehicle inspectors across North America will key in on brake compliance on Sept. 7 for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Day.

Inspectors will be looking for out-of-adjustment brakes, along with brake system and antilock braking system violations. CVSA says the goal of Brake Safety Day is to cut down on crashes caused by poorly maintained brakes.

Brakes violations make up the largest percentage of out-of-service violations, CVSA says, representing 45.7 percent of all OOS violations during 2016’s International Roadcheck campaign.

On Brake Safety Day, law enforcement officials will primarily conduct full Level I inspections and Level IV brake inspections on truckers. These will include inspections of brake system components to look for loose or missing parts, leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors and other faulty brake system components. Inspectors will also check antilock braking system malfunction lamps.

Earlier this year, CVSA conducted an unannounced Brake Safety Day on May 3. The two brake inspection days replace Brake Safety Week, which was conducted in previous years. Last year, inspectors put nearly 4,000 trucks out-of-service for brake and other violations during the seven-day Brake Safety Week blitz.
