Deep thinking, and many miles to go

“You can’t get two truckers to agree on anything.”

This is an often used and completely untrue statement. You can get two truckers to agree on something. It’s getting a third one that’s a unicorn.

I’m kidding (just a little), and I have a theory that I believe explains the differences of opinion amongst drivers.

Truckers have time to think about stuff. They have vast amounts of mind time to fill while rolling open highways, a lot of opportunity to examine things in their head while waiting eleventy-seven unpaid hours at the grocery cold docks. They’re deep thinkers, and people who are deep thinkers can offer an argument or opinion on pretty much anything.

There’s something about the lull of a rocking truck and the hum of a highway that unleashes the mind. I’ve done some of the best thinking of my life between Salina, Kan., and Limon, Colo. Sometimes, this isn’t a good thing.

“So I’ve been thinking about it, and I’m pretty sure Noah was an alien.”

“Is that right? I always thought he was a little weirdo. He had a nice car, though.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Noah. Our old neighbor. What the hell are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Noah from the Bible. But come to think of it, Noah the neighbor may have been an alien, too. I saw his eyes glow once.”

“I think that was probably the meth.”

“Wouldn’t it be weird if all the Noahs on Earth were aliens?”

“How many Noahs do we know-ah?”

“I can’t remember, but I think they were all weird.”

“You see what I did there?”

But I was already mesmerized by the passing scenery again, and pondering the possibilities of an infinite universe, where everyone named Noah is an alien, which of course would mean everyone not named Noah would be an alien to the Noahs, so in a sense, we’d all be aliens.

So yeah, it used to drive me crazy when I’d write an article or post a Facebook question that got 50,000 different answers and opinions – none of which agreeing with the other, but it doesn’t bother me anymore because I understand.

I guess I’ve had time to think about it.
