Diesel price soars

For the fourth week in the last five, the national average retail price of diesel rose increased, jumping 10 cents to $3.987 a gallon in the latest week, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Since Oct. 10, the national average price of diesel has climbed 26.6 cents a gallon. The last time the average price increased at least 10 cents a gallon was April 11.

Average prices across the nation rocketed higher. Leading the way were the Midwest, up 12.4 cents to $3.987, and the Rocky Mountain region, 11.5 cents higher to $4.093.

With the latest surge, $4-a-gallon prices have returned in many areas. The last time the national average price was $4 was May 16.

The national average price is 80.3 cents higher than a year ago. The record diesel price was $4.764 in July 2008.
