Diesel produces more smog than gasoline, study says

| October 24, 2012

Diesel engines produce nearly 15 times the amount of one of the main ingredients in smog than gasoline-powered engines, says a recent study by the University of Cal-Berkeley.

The study was in part funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, and, notably, the study concludes that “diesel exhaust is responsible for 65-90 percent” of a particular geographical region’s vehicular-delivered secondary organic aerosol — the smog ingredient.

If their from California their study wrong I’ve ran into this before with them they have no rite to publish that I’d like to see the calibration on their machines thts wrong

I really wish these idiots would get a clue! They need to understand that this country runs on diesel engines! The trucking industry absolutely runs this country, and the more they try to demonize diesel engines, and the more ridiculous regulations they try to pass, the harder it is going to be for the trucking industry to survive. When products cease to move, or cost so ridiculously much to move because trucking companies have to make up for the amount of money they are having to spend to keep in compliance, it absolutely destroys the economy! These people need to get a life, and stop trying so hard to demonize diesel engines! You have to ask yourself what the hell is their agenda? Because you know they have one. People don’t just choose to attack something like diesel engines just out of genuine concern for the environment. No no, there is way more to it than that. Somebody is set up to make lots of money from findings like this, while those of us in the trucking industry, as well as the rest of the people in this country have to suffer from it. The EPA and CARB have absolutely got to be stopped! They are destroying our lives! While some might think that what they are doing is good, and that they are protecting the planet, that is NOT AT ALL what it is about. It is about money. And we have got to stand up and do away with them before they get away with completely destroying everything!

You know that if the CARB and EPA put money in this study it is going to go their way. I wonder just how accurate is the study with a spread is 65 to 90 % against trucks. Is the same fake professor from CARB using another fake set of figures ? Probably.
Then again if the figures were 45% to 55 % it would not have the impact and would they would be hard pressed to justify huge fines and retrofits again. Or still.

They just need people to push around….or to sell crap to…someone comes up with an idea or something to sell, the general public wouldn’t buy into it, but a driver will. Remember boot camp..your first day out the main gate, every one want’s to sell you something..Well it’s the same crap, look at where the study came from…If diesel was that bad we would have black lung’s..and just how many tree’s do you see along the interstate’s DEAD? They are all pretty GREEN to me..

Another BS study paid for by the labor group Change-to-Win (Teamsters) in order to justify their green organizing campaign as why the O/O – independent trucker or small businessman, woman should be replaced by unionized company drivers behind the wheel of new fleet trucks. Owner/operators stand in their way of unionizing an all employee driver work force under current federal laws that don’t allow them to organize independent contractors who are not truly employees of a company in the eyes of the government. As veteran truckers we should all be long dead if the diesel engines were that bad after years of sleeping among them idling in truck stops, working on them, and driving hundreds of thousands of miles behind the wheel of older trucks not counting the heavy equipment, farm tractors, and work boats that rely on diesel engines. These folk will do anything, say anything , publish anything, pay anyone in government to accomplish their true goal of ridding the industry of all owner/operator truckers. The ones behind this outrage have never driven or even sat in a truck accept for a photo shoot yet they claim to represent hard working truckers coast to coast. The only dangerous pollution here is coming directly from their flawed CTW campaign against the American independent trucker….

The EPA is spending “our tax money” to promote results that may or may not be true, I agree, FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL
you will find the truth, oh well, If we get the “OBAMA” out of the white house, we may have a chance to survive. Remember, de control of trucking, and every opportunity that has enabled the small trucking company to succeed, has come about under a REPUBLICAN administration.

Unfortunately it is not just the trucker that is hurt in this CARB- EPA fiasco. It is the American people that consumer shat ruck bring them that ultimately foots the bill. Truckers get hit twice. Once as a trucker or small business owner and again as an American consumer. The cost gets passed on. There is no end in sight.

Well it’s not really surprising seeing how the so-called study came out of California. That state has been trying to push their socialistic views on the whole country. There are no contaminants in diesel, it’s sulfur and it falls to the ground. Take a look at the history here. California pushed thru their so-called studies before and got the whole country to buy off on the idea that ultra low sulfur diesel would be the answer to everyone’s concern’s, and yet here we are going down the same path of blaming the diesel powered engines years later for all the same environmental problems they had before. Wonder why their miracle cure didn’t work before? Oh yeah, because they couldn’t screw us over enough and get enough money to fix their corrupt and communist state so now their going to try it again.

Just like they did when the ships came into the L.A. port, they said they couldn’t idle because the were causing to much pollution, BUT if you pay this FEE (tax) you can idle all you want. Wheres all the concern for the environment? When their talking green they don’t mean environmentally safe they mean MONEY!! Now their talking about doing the same thing with older trucks. FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!
My truck is a 2000 model and I and it checked, you know what the emissions where? ZERO!!!
And I get 7.5 to 8 miles per gallon, all the new trucks with the greatest and latest smog control crap on them are lucky to get 4.5 to 5 miles per gallon, which in turn uses twice as much fuel as my 12 year old truck does. Now their talking about letting the older trucks come into the state as long as their willing to pay a FEE, I mean TAX! Wake up people it’s not about your safety, it’s not about keeping the environment safe and green, it’s about the other green, CASH!!!

I have not read the complete study and don’t think in this case it would be necessary. One part of the equation I’d be curious about is the ratio used. This looks like a 1:1. The problem is that there are 6 to 7 times the number of automobiles sitting all over California on the ( so-called) Expressways cooking up that smog. Therefore, one would have to multiply the finding on the auto side by 6 or 7. Everyone in this forum on this subject has great points. DRL hit it out of the park. I’ve said the same in other articles, “follow the money”. DRL up one for you!!
