Jerry GinterA truck driver for CFI out of Joplin, Mo., has been named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association for helping a man who suffered a stroke while driving.
Jerry Ginter was heading eastbound on I-70 outside of Denver, Colo., when he noticed a distressed vehicle coming toward him in the eastbound lane in a construction zone. The vehicle stopped in the road and a woman got out and approached Ginter before telling him the driver of the vehicle had had a stroke.
The car started moving again, toward Ginter’s truck, and he got out and saw that the driver of the car was unconscious with his foot on the accelerator. Ginter was able to open the door of the car and was running alongside it to try to take it out of gear, but the driver woke up startled and thought Ginter was trying to hurt him. “I was trying to get the keys away to prevent him from leaving and he was trying to drive away,” said Ginter.
Another driver arrived on the scene and entered the vehicle on the passenger side and was able to remove the keys. Ginter then moved the car and his truck to the shoulder to wait for an ambulance.
For helping the driver, Ginter was presented with a certificate, patch, lapel pin and truck decals by TCA honoring him as a Highway Angel. CFI also received a certificate acknowledging their driver as a TCA Highway Angel.
