The Truckload Carriers Association recently named John Lilley, of Kelowna, B.C., a Highway Angel. Lilley drives for Bison Transport out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and he tried to help save an injured man in a fatal car crash, leaning upon his medical expertise at the scene. Lilley came upon an accident, and after hearing on the CB that there was a need for volunteers with medical training, he made his way to the scene. Lilley has 23 years of experience as a volunteer search and rescue medical technician. He was asked to focus on helping the driver of the four-door passenger vehicle that had crashed after losing control entering a tunnel. The driver was bleeding internally and externally, and Lilley worked to maintain the man’s weakening pulse. Despite Lilley’s efforts, the driver died due to injuries. Lilley recalls the day emotionally. “I tried everything I possibly could,” he said. “I don’t regret what I tried. I know I did my best.”
