Max Farrell and Andrew Kirpalani, creators of the WorkHound app, won the first-ever Truck Tank competition at the Great American Trucking Show.

The duo beat out nine other competitors to win $5,000 from Commercial Fleet Financing, Inc. to help their young business.

The WorkHound app is a driver retention tool that allows drivers to share feedback about their company, and the app aggregates the data and shares insights the companies can use to foster better relationships with the drivers.

“The trucking industry has an annual turnover rate of 97 percent, and a big reason for that is a disconnect between the drivers and the companies,” Farrell said. “Our app allows drivers to share their feedback, both positive and negative, anonymously, and in turn the companies can use the data the app provides to find out what they can do to better the relationships with the drivers to lower the turnover rate.”

The app costs $19 per driver per month, but Farrell said that’s a lot cheaper than having to hire and train a new driver.

“We talked to more than 100 fleets about the cost of recruiting a new driver, and they all answered somewhere between $5,000 and $8,000,” he said. “If you can retain drivers with the help of our app, you’re saving a lot of money.”
