EPA Certifies Third Caterpillar Engine

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has certified Caterpillar’s C15 engine, the third Caterpillar engine the agency has certified for on-highway trucks.

Full production of the engine, used by North American truck fleets and owner-operators as well as in fire trucks and emergency vehicles, will be offered in the 435 to 550 horsepower range.

The engine is equipped with Caterpillar’s ACERT (Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology), which reduces emissions at the point of combustion to satisfy Environmental Protection Agency emission standards that became effective Oct. 1.

Full production of the C15 will start in the third quarter of this year, and all Caterpillar on-highway truck and bus engines will be equipped with ACERT technology by the fourth quarter.

Caterpillar said the certification makes the company the first engine manufacturer to offer 2004 diesel engines that are fully EPA-compliant in both the large-and- medium-duty truck market. The EPA certified the company’s C7 and C9 engines earlier this year for use in on-highway trucks and buses.
