Family Ties

Ron and Marcia Shifflet of Canton, Ohio, met new friends this year at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. They plan to attend their first Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., March 31 through April 2 and get back together with them.

“We were very excited about GATS and want to get a chance to reconnect with friends at Mid-America,” Shifflet says. The Shifflets are a strong trucking family and enjoy meeting other trucking families in what is often a lonely job.

Another strong trucking family is the Breedens of Plainville, Ind., whose extended family, past and present, boasts 21 CDL holders. The Breedens won the Truckers News Great American Trucking Family award last year.

And we’re looking for another family this year – one with deep roots in the trucking industry and deep ties to each other and their community.

While there’s plenty to keep you busy at the Mid-America Trucking Show – like a free Trucker Appreciation concert sponsored by Kenworth, giveaways, seminars and chances for celebrity autographs (see p. 13) – we could really use your help at the Truckers News booth.

At our booth, you can see what’s new with our magazine and products for sale like hats, jackets, coffee mugs and shirts. Best of all, you can help us find the next Great American Trucking Family. Do you know of a family who deserves to be given this honor? Families with third-, fourth- and fifth-generation truckers or drivers with extended trucking ties – spouses, children and other relatives – can enter for a chance to be named the Great American Trucking Family. Industry honors and general civic involvement should be noted, too.

The top family will get to travel to the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas to accept their award and be wined and dined by Truckers News staff. They will also be featured in an upcoming issue of Truckers News.

If you are going to be attending the Mid-America Trucking Show, stop by and fill out an application to nominate a trucking family for the honor. Or drop us a line or an e-mail, and tell us about your family or someone you know. Check out the entry form on p. 57 of this issue.
