Fifth-place winners: Monkey, Shasta and Diesel the parrot

| December 28, 2013

The fifth-place winners of Overdrive’s Most Loved Pet are a Pekingese, a tabby and a parrot. Their owners wrote in to tell us what makes their pets so special.

Dog

The Million Mile MonkeyThe “Million Mile Monkey” is a 16-year-old Pekingese. Her owner, Dave, says she has a sweet disposition.

“(Monkey) has lots of friends all over the country and now on Facebook, too. She loves truckin’ with Dad and is a great Naviguesser! Besides, she’s the old woman that loves me. Of course she should be Overdrive‘s Most Loved Pet.”

Cat

ShastaOwner Melissa loves her orange-and-white tabby, Shasta.

“He is the most lovable kitty I have ever had. He is leash trained, loves to ride in the truck and my car, and plays fetch even in the rig. He loves having his belly rubbed, he cuddles, sleeps on my head and nibbles my ear when he “hugs” me. He is my best friend and great watch cat — he lets us know if anyone or anything comes near our rig or trailer. He is the best!”

Diesel YoungBrian Young says his parrot, Diesel, is “truly unique to have in the truck.”

“He can make you laugh when you’re riding down the road and he says something funny to you. He loves to climb his toys that I hang from the ceiling of the truck cab. I was stopped on the scales in West Memphis, Ark., with an oversize load to check my permit. Usually they have me pull around back and bring the permit inside, but this time was different. I walked in and handed my permit to the officer and he was laughing about my bird. He asked his name and then started calling Diesel over the loud speaker at the window. With me not being in the vehicle Diesel didn’t know what to think except to look out the window at us in the scale house. That probably made his day and I thought it was pretty cool myself. People really get a kick out of Diesel when we are going down the road and they look up at my co-driver in the passenger window. There you have it — me and my trucking bird, Diesel.”

Was hoping the Million Mile Monkey was actually a monkey, but dogs are great too.
