Find Your Way

Magellan eXplorist 100 GPS

Delivering a load to its destination on time is part of establishing a good driving reputation. Getting there can be a lot easier with a little help from these informative products.

Hand-held GPS
If your truck doesn’t have a Global Positioning System built in and you’re not ready for a big investment, you can try out the $100 Magellan eXplorist 100 GPS. It’s great for the road and for taking a hike in the great outdoors. The hand-held tool has an impact-resistant, waterproof exterior and all-new Magellan TrueFix technology with a 14-parallel-channel, WAAS/EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver to provide precise position fixes within three meters while ensuring reliable, accurate satellite-signal acquisition and tracking. The one-button access takes you directly to the functions that matter most: the menu, navigation screens, personal points-of-interest, “go to” routing and backlight – all on a 2.3-inch LCD screen. The eXplorist 100 stores up to 500 waypoints, 20 routes and three track logs with up to 2,000 points each, providing plenty of storage even for avid navigators.

North, South, East, West
Keep on track on unfamiliar roads with the Wayfinder V100 digital compass. Made especially for use in vehicles, the compass installs to your windshield and electronically compensates for the magnetic fields generated by your truck. Easy-to-read letters boldly display the direction of travel with eight cardinal points. Batteries are included. The Wayfinder sells for $29.95 at pnicorp.com. Or, for the same price at cabelas.com, get a C-Tek digital compass that includes a thermometer, clock and calendar.

Truckstop Directory Plus
Every over-the-road trucker needs a good atlas. Why not try one with something extra? Truckers News has teamed up with Rand McNally to produce a complete, full-color atlas that includes detailed location and amenity listings for nearly 6,000 truckstops. Printed on high-quality paper that will stand up to daily in-cab use, the 2005 National Truckstop Directory is the must-have resource for truckers. The Truckstop Directory is on sale for $19.95 at Petro, Pilot and Love’s truckstops nationwide.

Talking You Through It
Now there’s a backseat driver that’s actually helpful. If you don’t have time to stop and take a look at an atlas or directory, the Talking Road Whiz can speak aloud distance, directions and driving time to more than 80,000 gas stations, hotels, restaurants, rest stops, hospitals, towns, highways, campgrounds and tourist sites located near interstate roads across the United States. The pocket-sized, battery-operated device talks a motorist in the right direction when the user keys in the interstate highway, the direction being traveled and the closest mile marker. The TRW will also provide step-by-step driving directions and driving times between 250 of the largest cities in the nation. The device sells for $39.90 and is available at Office Max stores nationwide, selected Target stores and Discovery Channel stores, or it can be purchased online at this site.
