First of Rhode Island’s trucks-only tolls coming later this year

The first two locations for Rhode Island’s trucks-only tolls will be operational by December, said Rhode Island DOT Director Peter Alviti Jr. this week in a radio interview with WPRO.

A contractor for the state will begin building and installing the toll gantries on the northbound and southbound sides of I-95 near Hopkinton and Richmond, as well as near Exeter (points 1 and 2 on the map to the right).

Alviti said the toll gantries are expected to be operational and collecting tolls by December. The full interview with Alviti can be heard here, with the information on tolls beginning at the 9:40 mark.

As part of the RhodeWorks plan signed into law last year, a total of 14 toll locations will be installed throughout the state. According to a report by the Providence Journal, the 12 remaining toll locations will take another 18 months to get up and running, and the full network would be operational by early summer 2019.

The money generated from the tolls, which the state expects to be approximately $45 million each year, will go to infrastructure repairs, such as highways and bridges.

Class 8 truckers will pay a maximum of $20 to travel one-way through the state on I-95. Each electronic toll gantry a trucker passes under would cost about $3. The maximum daily charge would be $40.
