Atlas Van Lines received the 2008 John Biasini Environmental Excellence Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana on Oct. 10. Atlas won in the energy/renewable resources category because the company significantly reduced its energy and renewable resource output in 2007. Atlas’ corporate headquarters began implementing a focused approach to saving energy and materials in early 2007. In one year, the company reduced printed documents by 21 percent, saving more than 1 million pages (and approximately 130 trees) and nearly $50,000 in paper and ink costs. Atlas also shut down computers overnight, introduced flat-panel monitors and increased data retention. But the company didn’t stop there. This year, Atlas has taken several other steps – including a heating and cooling energy audit and installation of sensors to turn lights on only when someone enters a room.
