Carriers, driver recognized
Georgia-Pacific’s transportation department recently recognized national and regional carriers and a driver for outstanding performance. Schneider National, the largest truckload carrier in North America, won the Dedicated Truck Fleets Award. Robert Bearden Incorporated, a family-owned company with a strong presence in the southeast and eastern United States, was honored with the Truckload Carrier Award. Market Transport Services, a nationwide carrier based in Portland, Ore., received the Truckload and Intermodal Carrier Award. Michael Seiling, a Dart Transit Company hauler with more than 29 years of commercial driving experience, won the Dedicated Driver of the Year Award. In 2008, Seiling was accident-free, averaged 6.82 miles per gallon and achieved a 100 percent on-time rate.

Celadon named Carrier of the Year
Celadon Trucking Services has been honored by Ryder System as its 2008 Carrier of the Year among national truckload providers. Celadon also received Ryder’s 2007 Carrier of the Year award. The award, resulting from a top score in Ryder Transportation Management’s 200-point carrier quality analysis, recognizes excellence through a variety of metrics, including on-time performance, claims handling, customer service, technology applications, economic value and innovation.

West Side recognizes Drivers of the Month
West Side Transport named its Drivers of the Month for January through April 2009: January – Tom Jolly of Lamar, Mo.; February – Mariane Foerst of Johnson City, Tenn.; March – Charles Hollon of Chuckey, Tenn.; April – Gary Peldo of Demotte, Ind. Drivers are selected monthly based on outstanding achievement in driven miles, fuel management, service and professionalism.

Con-way driver achieves 2 million miles
Con-way Freight driver Jack Walker, of Henryville, Ind., has achieved 2 million miles of safe driving without an accident. He drove those miles over 24 years, beginning in June 1985 and ending June 27, 2009. Walker has worked for Con-way Freight the entire time and has been a professional truck driver for 30 years. He has been married for 29 years to his wife, Patricia, and has three children: Lacey, 26; James, 21; and Jack, 19. Walker also has two grandchildren: Lauren, 8; and Andre, three months. In his free time he enjoys hunting, boating and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
