Truckers may attend the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee meeting at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky.
The committee is developing suggestions for the agency to define safety violations by motor carrier management. The U.S. transportation secretary can suspend, amend or revoke any part of a motor carrier’s registration if it discovers a carrier officer has a practice of avoiding compliance or concealing noncompliance of FMCSA and hazardous materials regulations.
The committee began working on the subject at its December meeting. Following the Louisville meeting, which may include expert presentation, it plans to complete a report to the Obama administration on its conclusions. The agency has encouraged members to include suggestions on what company officers should be considered, due process principles and if more enforecement and legal staff will be needed for related cases and appeals.
The committee will meet 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 31, with the last hour reserved for public comment, in the Willow Room at the Galt House Hotel. The public can provide public comment during the April 1 meeting, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lobby B, Meeting Room C-101 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
The FMCSA appoints the 19-member committee and provides tasks for it to consider and provide responses to the agency. Committee members include representatives of the American Trucking Associations, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and management of Con-way Freight and Clark Freight Lines. Safety advocates and safety enforcement are also represented in the committee.
The public may also comment by March 23, which must include the Docket No., FMCSA-2006-26367:
