FMCSA seeks comment

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration again has requested comment on a proposed assessment of truckers’ opinions of an on-board monitoring system it is evaluating.

The agency published the June 24 Notice and Request for Comment after receiving only one response to its initial comment request, published in the March 29 Federal Register. After the Office of Management and Budget approves the FMCSA’s Information Collection Request, the agency will assess truckers’ views of the system as a part of a field test.

The results of the questionnaire portion of the 18-month study will be integrated into the larger field test report on the effectiveness of the system in improving safety.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association’s response to the agency’s first request for comment was the FMCSA had not provided sufficient information, such as a draft questionnaire or the type of system it will test. Other documents with further information are not referenced in the notice or placed on the docket, the association said.

The June 24 notice sets a July 25 deadline for comment, but provides no additional information on the research.

Comments must reference Federal Docket Management System Docket No. FMCSA-2011-0163 and be addressed to the attention of the Desk Officer, Department of Transportation/Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Submissions may be made by:
