Health issues affecting all truckers will take center stage in the next few weeks.
First, a final rule on the start of the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners is expected to be announced by the end of January. Drivers will be required to have their commercial drivers license health exams conducted by a certified medical examiner. Examiners will have to take a standardized test for certification and undergo regular training. The requirement would phase in over the next few years.
Also, recommendations that could help frame a final rule regulating obstructive sleep apnea are in the works from advisory groups to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The agency could receive the drafts as early as February.
