Four-wheeler: ‘I am so sick of 18-wheelers!’

| April 01, 2012

Over the transom today in Overdrive‘s Nashville bureau here, as my office is often known among the editors in Alabama, came this letter. So much for sharing the road!

Dear editor,
I am so sick of 18-wheelers. They are always in the way. Who needs them? I sure don’t.

They never seem to do the speed limit. They cause far too many problems. They go through town in the right lane we need to use to get off to go to our workplace or shopping. They are like following a dirty wall and we never see our exit in time to get off.

We pass them and get off at our exit so we can get where we are going without being late and all we get is a blast on the air horn and the middle finger. Why?

The truth of the matter is: You have 18 wheels and 18 brakes and I have only four little wheels and four brakes, so your trucks can stop faster and sooner. What is the problem? These 18-wheel drivers need to get a real job. I am tired of supporting them.

Why don’t they just get in the left lanes in towns and go on so us hardworking people can get to work with out being harassed by them? What is so hard about doing that? Get out of the right-hand lane, for crying out loud! Give us taxpayers that pay your food bill a break. Do you think you truckers could get bigger engines so you would not be so slow in traffic? Ask your bosses.

Your trucks cause all the damage to the roads and my taxes pay for the repairs.

If you truckers were so good, why don’t you just slow down and move over for us when we try to merge? You know we have to have coffee and get our daily morning and afterwork texts so give us a break and move over. What is so hard about doing that?

My hands are full so the turn signal can’t be used often or I would spill my coffee. Professional drivers, my foot. You truck drivers think you own the road. My taxes paid for the road, not yours.

I am so tired of footing the bill for this. Trucks should be banned from cities so workers can get to or from their jobs without be terrorized by these huge trucks belching smoke and squealing brakes…

Don’t give me any guff about what you pay. I gas my car twice a week and it costs me $45 dollars each time I gas up. My car holds 16 gallons and you truckers have fuel tanks that hold a couple of hundred  gallons so don’t  tell me about costs. I know, I pay it twice a week.

If Mayor Daley were still around this would not be happening.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Itz Mirode
Chicago, Ill.

Wow, I was really getting pissed off while reading this.. good joke!

  • Dee Okolotowicz

First of all, I have a perfect driving record, and anyone who knows me, knows I’ve never blown the air horn when someone gets off an exit. I’m sure it happens upon occasion, but this writer is completely inaccurate in every comment she made regarding the trucks themselves as well as about the drivers in general. Yes, I agree, there are some bad truck drivers on the road, but there are also bad drivers of 4-wheelers as well.

Exactly where does this individual plan to get all her goods from, if our trucks do not deliver them to her stores? Is she going to drive to California for her produce or her clothes or any other product? And what about her comment regarding “supporting us?” Exactly how does this clueless individual do that? She’s never paid for one thing of mine, food, fuel, truck payments, taxes, etc. So what exactly is this diluted woman talking about?

Trucking is a real job, a job that’s much more difficult than anything she’s probably ever done in her life, but of course, she wouldn’t know that. This so called “not real job” of ours makes it possible for goods to be delivered in a timely and productive way. Goods could go by rail, sure, but then Itz would have to visit her local train yard daily for those goods, without our trucks delivering them from the rails.

I do agree with Itz on one issue, I would love to get in the left lane and by pass their towns without being in the right lane where everyone gets on and off. Itz, we agree! So just go get involved in politics and lobby your representatives to pass a law for us to be *allowed* in that left lane. Itz is SO completely clueless (showing her intelligence) that she doesn’t seem to be able to read english well, because if she could, she would see that we are not allowed by law to be in that lane, most of the time, in most places.

Yes Itz, we have 18 wheels, but they don’t brake faster and quicker than your four do, despite what your opinion is. Your opinion is factually incorrect. If Itz is going to be allowed to make completely erroneous and ridiculous statements that are not Factual, than she must take the heat for this by being called stupid. Because one can always check my statements and see they are factual. I always check my facts before I write negatively about someone or something. This is obviously not what Itz or the average person does today. They don’t think, they simply spew personal comments and convince themselves they know what is accurate. Why do you think we are in trouble in this country in the first place…people like Itz.

She doesn’t pay my food bill, taxes or anything else. She’s obviously in need of help from us, because the comments made are so completely far fetched and untrue, that it can only be assumed that the general public is far less educated than we truckers. We should help, you’re right…help send them back to school where they obviously need to be to learn about weights, measures and other facts that apply in real life.

Her taxes pay for the road, not mine? Great! I’ll send my road tax bill to Itz from now on. Can I please have her address? If not, then I’ll just send IRS my road tax bill and this letter of comment she made, so they can bill her. My fuel taxes pay a large portion of the road repairs, which is why there’s a new highway bill being passed this year.

By the way Itz, if you’re reading this, holding your coffee (and not using your hand for your turn signal) could now be considered a “driving hazard” by the new laws that are out here. So be careful we don’t turn you in for being a distracted driver.

And finally, your $45 twice a week doesn’t compare to my daily fuel bill of $600. So please refrain from blowing smoke yourself.

I hate to inform you Itz, but Mr. Daley backed the “Teamsters” and in case you aren’t aware, Teamsters are the trucking industry union. So, I doubt seriously that Mr. Daley would have bit the hand that fed him.

And I’m highly insulted that Overdrive actually put this letter in the mag. I hope seriously, that this is just an April Fool’s joke.

    Sincerely,

    Dee Okolotowicz, Owner-Operator

This is just too funny! The writer hits the 4-wheeler attitude nail right on the head! Who needs 18-wheelers, anyway? We could all just go back to a world with almost all of us living in rural towns with residents of just a few big cities receiving their food via horse and wagon from rural farms just outside of town! And, a total US population of under 100,000,000. And, just think, we could bring back the railroads as super powers and owners of most of the critical real estate in the country for their depots and so forth, and with their steam engines belching smoke and fire, two-day passages from the East Coast to the Midwest, dirt roads for you to drive when vacationing in California from Chicago, and so on and on. . .

Indeed Dee; April Fool’s Joke indeed, but your points are well taken, no doubt. Always some seriousness in any satire. Thanks for the thoughts!

  • Jason Peacher

This story may be an April Fools Joke, i have read reports of people claiming this BS before and after April 1st. I am an ex-O.T.R. driver and i have people come within inches of my front bumper blowing their little horns thinking i’m going to give them room. When in fact it is these 4 wheelers who cause a good majority (over 70%) of accidents. If i ever see a report like this published in any magazine, i’ll rip that article out and use is for toliet paper!

  • http://overdriveonline.com/channel19 Todd Dills

As we all know, Jason, for certain — we spend a lot of time calling out media reports that sound very much like this on the Channel 19 blog and elsewhere, and Alkire’s capturing of the wrongheaded sentiment expressed in such reports was just so spot-on we had to do something with it. Thanks for reading, and thanks for helping us call attention to the reality of where the vast majority of safety problems on the roads today rest. . . .

Your kidding me right??? Noone can be this dumb…I mean really. Lets start from the beginning. You stated

‘I am so sick of 18-wheelers. They are always in the way. Who needs them? I sure don’t.’ Is that right? Dont need 18-wheelers huh? Wonder how food will get to the stores, clothes to the store, gas to the fuel stations, basically everything you wear, drive or need…has been in a truck. Without us…America stops.

“They never seem to do the speed limit. They cause far too many problems.
They go through town in the right lane we need to use to get off to go
to our workplace or shopping. They are like following a dirty wall and
we never see our exit in time to get off.” The reason we Dont do the speed limit thru cities and such is because we are far heavier and much bigger then you. We are trying to be safe and keep a safe following distance only to be cutoff by a moron like you that is in a huge rush to get to the next stop light .04 seconds sooner then had they just stayed behind us. But this is another subject I will get into later. Yes, we use the right lane. If you werent so busy texting, putting on makeup, reading the newspaper, talking on a cell phone, clipping your toenails, or whatever else it is you do to distract yourself when your supposed to be driving you would see the great big signs that say we have to be in the right lanes. I understand they are only about 3 foot by 3 foots signs in huge letters that say this, and they are only posted about every 1/2 mile or so, but at least try to read the signs next time before you start whining about something we are legally obligated to do. As far as us causeing far to many problems, Im not even going to touch that. Now, your not being able to see your sign for your precious exit, how can you possibly blame us for that? I have yet to be on an Interstate that didnt not only have the signs for the exits posted high above the interstate at least a mile before the exit, but also again at the exit. If you werent so busy trying to pass us you might want to actually look up and read the big green things with the letters on them. They tell you what exit is coming up…I find them very useful. I will agree that alot of trucks on the road are covered in dirt and bugs. Do you have any clue how many miles these vehicles run per day and the cost of having one of them washed is? Its not like we can pull into the corner coin operated car wash, pop in 2 bucks and run our rig thru. Its a minimum of $25 and takes at least an hour to wash…thats just the Truck. Throw in another $30 for the trailer and another 30 minutes. Only to drive 50 miles down the road and the truck being dirty again. We travel about 3000 miles per week vs your 300. Besides…what does the condition of the cleanliness have to do with anything? Moron.

“We pass them and get off at our exit so we can get where we are going
without being late and all we get is a blast on the air horn and the
middle finger. Why?” I will answer that for you…the reason why is, because you rush as fast as you can to get in front of us, cut us off, then slow down. You dont save anytime by doing this, you take away our safe following distance, and you put yourself and us in a situation where we can both be killed. Yes, it pisses us off and your lucky all your getting is a toot of the airhorn and a middle finger. Myabe next time we should maintain our speed so when you hit your brakes we are not able to stop in time therefor running over you like your a speedbump and your children have to growup with a parent? Would you prefer that? Moron.

“The truth of the matter is: You have 18 wheels and 18 brakes and I have
only four little wheels and four brakes, so your trucks can stop faster
and sooner. What is the problem? These 18-wheel drivers need to get a
real job. I am tired of supporting them. ” The truth of the matter is: We are 80,000 lbs and 73 feet long. You are 2500 lbs and 10 feet long. No, we cant stop sooner and no we cant stop faster. It takes the length of a football field in order to stop a truck that is fully loaded going 55 mph. We have a real job, we are americas truck drivers. Without us America stops. You dont support us. If you did, we wouldnt be out here, we would be sitting on your couch watching tv. Moron.

“Why don’t they just get in the left lanes in towns and go on so us
hardworking people can get to work with out being harassed by them? What
is so hard about doing that? Get out of the right-hand lane, for crying
out loud! Give us taxpayers that pay your food bill a break. Do you
think you truckers could get bigger engines so you would not be so slow
    in traffic? Ask your bosses.

Your trucks cause all the damage to the roads and my taxes pay for the repairs.” Call your local government offices and tell them this. Do you think that we wouldnt rather be in the left lanes moving on thru town quicker rather then having to slow down every mile because you continue to cut os off to save .04 seconds? Problem is, even if we were allowed in the left lane, then you would bitch because we were slowing you down while you were trying to break the speed limit. Why cant they go in the right lane? We do not harass you. Do you honestly think that while we are trying to make it 6 or 700 miles that we have nothing better to do then to harass the other cars on the road? We would prefer you left us alone and quit harassing us. Again, how exactly is it that your paying our food bill? Last I checked, its me that pays…but I could be wrong. If in fact it is you paying my bill…then would you please up my per diem…im getting sick of having to buy low priced food, Im ready for a steak. The size of our engines have very little to do with our speed. We are merely trying to be safe while being forced to look out for meatheads such as yourself that are trying to speed around us in order to save a 1/2 second. If we went any faster…well…we wouldnt be having this conversation because fromt he sounds of it, someone would have made you a speed bump many years ago. As for your tax dollars paying for the roads…are you serious? You honestly did not do your homework before you decided to look like an idiot now did you? Not only do we have to pay higher fuel taxes when we fuel our trucks but we are legally obligated to keep track of every single mile we drive thru each state and pay an additional fuel tax per mile on those miles. So technically we pay way more tax dollars for the road repairs then you could ever dream of paying. Not to mention we pay 2 to 3 times as much at tolls. Again…used for road repairs. So maybe its you that should get of the roads and not us. Moron.

“If you truckers were so good, why don’t you just slow down and move over
for us when we try to merge? You know we have to have coffee and get
our daily morning and afterwork texts so give us a break and move over.
What is so hard about doing that?” Wow! You really just said that! So, if your cruising down the interstate at 60 mph and another car is merging…your going to tell me that you slow down to 35 mph because the merging car is a moron and crawling onto the interstate? Have you any idea the traffic jams this would cause? I see your in Chicago…which in itself explains alot…but really? If this even made any sense at all what so ever…which it dont, but if it did…rush hour would be 3x as long as it is now. As far as moving over, we do when we are able, but alot of times…as soon as we put our turn signals on to move over, morons such as yourself speed up and make it so we cant. Maybe you should have wrote this to your fellow car drivers and made an attempt to look at your own discrepancies rather then trying so hard to look like a complete moron. Read your texts when your not driving…moron.

“My hands are full so the turn signal can’t be used often or I would spill my coffee. Professional drivers, my foot. You truck drivers think you own the road. My taxes paid for the road, not yours.” Now, as much as I would hate for your coffee to be spilt, I would much rather run your stupid ass over when you change lanes without signaling. I understand there are some drivers out there that are not professional, but a majority of us are. Your safety and our own safety is most important to us….in that order. But I would expect for you not to understand the meaning of a professional driver after reading the moronic things you have already stated. As far as us owning the road, I agree with you on this. We do not. But much like you…we pay taxes. Our tax dollars go to pay for these same roads. We have just as much a right to be out here as you do. Just so you know, when the interstate system was first built, it was built for the US military. Later on Trucks were allowed on it in order for us to get from state to state much quicker then the secondary roads. It wasnt until later before cars were allowed on them…so technically, in that sense….we do own them. But because we are professional…we will share. For now anyways. Moron.

Don’t give me any guff about what you pay. I gas my car twice a week
and it costs me $45 dollars each time I gas up. My car holds 16 gallons
and you truckers have fuel tanks that hold a couple of hundred gallons
so don’t tell me about costs. I know, I pay it twice a week.

If Mayor Daley were still around this would not be happening.” Twice a week for $45 a pop? Wow! Thats pocket change compared to $500 a day. Plus the addition IFTA tax we are forced to pay per mile we drive in each state. Yes…most trucks these days hold about 200 gallons. If your pumping 45 bucks twice a week I would assume you probably have a small to midsize vehicle. Assuming that, your probably getting anywhere form 22-27 miles per gallon. Thats alot compared to my 6.7 miles per gallon. Yes, we need bigger tanks or you would also be whining about all the truck stops because we have to stop every 300 miles to get more fuel. Im not real sure whom this Mayor Daley is…but if he were still around, Im sure he would agree with me when I say…you are a complete Moron.

Safe travels to you my friend. May you find peace in your life and learn a little respect for those that keep this country moving. Truckers are the heart and soul of this wonderful country. With out us…America stops.

  • Driver

I’m a truck driver and just so u know we may have 18 wheels and 18 brakes but that has nothing to do with stopping distance dot said it takes twice the time to stop in a 18 wheeler try about 4 times the distance your car is about 3 to 4 thousand pounds we are close to 80 thousand loaded it takes a lot to stop that kind of weight so slamming your brakes in front of us is putting yours and everyone else’s life in the car with u in danger and by the way if u use it wear it eat it drink it sit in or on it stand on it or ride in it we haul it we truck drivers stay away from our loved ones for weeks and months on in to deliver the things u need so remember that next time u wanna make rude comments

  • James

you have 18 brakes? unless your truck has 9 axles, you only have 10 brakes.
