Freight TSI up in June

For-hire freight as measured by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s index rose 2.6 percent in June from May and 4.1 percent from a year earlier.

The increase in the Freight Transportation Services Index came after two monthly declines. The 2.6 percent May-to-June increase was the biggest month-to-month rise since November 2009, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.

The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index.

For the first six months of the year, freight shipments measured by the index were up 1.3 percent.
