Friday Five: Weight loss tips

Updated Jun 27, 2014

Sometimes knowing is half the battle, so here are five facts about weight loss that may help you out.

One pound is equal to 3,500 calories

The general idea is that for every 3,500 calories you burn beyond what you take in, you will lose one pound. So, for example, if you burned 500 calories each day by exercising (and also watched your diet to ensure you are eating healthy portions), you could lose one pound per week.

Fiber can help

Eating foods high in dietary fiber can help you lose weight more quickly because fiber causes you to feel full faster and on fewer calories.

Water can make a big difference

If you currently are drinking regular soda all day and make the switch to water, you can save yourself a lot of empty calories. For example, if you drink five 20-oz. Coke Classics each day, you spend more than 1,200 calories without ever even eating anything.

Look in the mirror

For some folks, the number on the scale may be a little discouraging when you are putting in effort but not seeing a huge difference. But take time to look in the mirror and see the difference in the way your body looks. Sometimes you can see the good affects of exercise there before you see it in the numbers.

Weight loss can spice up your love life

Some studies indicate that losing as little as 10 pounds can actually increase your libido and stamina. Not a bad motivator!
