Hours of service, CSA top targets for House transportation committee

| January 25, 2013

The transportation committee in the U.S. House for the new congressional term said this week it intends to target hours of service rules, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability program and state tolls on federal highways as their primary oversight goals for the next two years.

The highway subcommittee is responsible for overseeing trucking regulations, among other things, and plans to take a look at the changing hours of service rules and follow up an an already-requested audit of CSA.

  • Robert

Just one 1/2 step to giving it all up. They will never get it straight.

  • http://www.facebook.com/reddnekmoma Jan Johnson

Just a waste of time anyway Hell we are all working part time anyway. Freight rates suck so bad you can’t afford a drive or break downs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/reddnekmoma Jan Johnson

I got a better idea sence we can’t make any money out here anymore least let them csa @ss haul this cheap crap we all go home.

  • http://www.facebook.com/reddnekmoma Jan Johnson

Sence Californa emm laws I sure glade they did. it makes it to where we don’t have to worry about going out there anymore. I don’t miss them at all. I don’t have to worry about all them ticket writeing chp’s. Life has getten ez’er without California in it thks epa.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.higgins.5473 Kevin Higgins

It’s not just California, it’s gotten bad everywhere. The trucking industry is targeted as a major source of revenue, a part of which is the back pockets of the drivers themselves. A roadside level 2 and 2 more separate stops within 6 hours of the first one, all in Texas recently made my mind up. There was no cause for it, considering no violations were found and I was given a clean report. It’s just the idea of it all. Just over 30 years of it is enough for me, they can have it!

  • odiillc

exactly what i said….the sad thing is this. ive driven a truck safly for more than 30 years no accidents no harm to any property and very little cargo damage if any. when they started this crap it was to much to worry about my pete has turned into a flower pot it only moves when i cut the grass. i wont come back to the industry. there have been many like me who have given up. it took a special kind of person to stick with this line of work to begin with and they have ran most of them off with csa so my only question is how safe is the industry now?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sue.haubrick Sue Marsh

The hours of service should not be the only issue, the eobr should also be reconsidered. There is also the issue of changing the gross weight for trucks from 80,000 lbs gross to 97,000 pounds gross. These are issue that most truckers don’t even know about. What is congress doing about aggressive drivers? Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truckers need to stand together now. We desparately need better representation in Washington DC. Perhaps we should begin an organization like PATT and call it TAAD truckers against aggressive drivers.

  • Barney Flintstones

The HOS rules are dangerous to the motoring public. They put a clock over a drivers head and tell him he or she has 14 hours to complete there trip.More drivers are driving tired because of the new rule you cant stop the clock. If a driver wants to take a 5 hour break he should not be penalized for it.The fatality rate for truck drivers has gone up due to this rule, by someone who knows nothing about the industry.

  • OV1D

We don’t need a march on Washington to gain public awareness of the disgrace of Ray LaHood and the Oboma administration. What is needed, is, we just need to stop
marching. It has been said, and we see it happen every time a natural disaster threatens a population, that present
stock levels of all commodities will be exhausted in less than three days if transportation of these commodities we to cease. We have to take it to the consumer. If transportation of consumable goods were stop for four days, we in the transportation industry would be in a position of power. And in that position we could command an audience with the public. We would have our day in the court of public opinion.
We would be able to demand favorable changes to the Government’s regulations that our reducing our standard of living, or else we will shut it all down again. We don’t have to suffer this tyranny. We do have the power, if we have the courage to us it. But who will lead?

  • John

im done! i cant make money! and i became truck driver because i use to be able make some good leaving, but now it seems impossible!let them have all this loads for 1$ per mile and i would like to see their faces! go ahead! cut the hours! and will spend 2 days not with the family but some where in the middle of nowhere! thank you very much! i will tell to my kid, that Dad is not home because he is enjoying a view in Idaho, i think they going to loose a lot of drivers!and then they will realize how dump is a low! they dont care about us! they makes 100000$ a year seating in the chair and making stupid lows!!! but ask them if any of them drove a truck! ask them if they ever were 3-4 weeks out there ,with the winters roads and stuff! they have no idea when they makes those lows what they actually doing! its VERY SAD!

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

Times they are a changing, either roll with it or go home, it’s that simple. Stop crying, 2/3 of the USA makes a hell of a lot less money than Truckers! Don’t believe me? DO YOUR RESEARCH!

  • Josef

    Amen

  • Josef

We all need to unite and stop hauling for three days. Common, we all can afford to loose 3 days of pay. By the third day america will collapse and we will be in position to negotiate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/don.lanier1 Don Lanier

Between the so called safety steps of the HOS redo and the Medical changes and sleep apnea and the lower freight rates, more costs for O/O and License amnd Regulation how are men supposed to earn a living, The Huge companies are doing there best to end the reign of the Owner Operator, Regulate them out of business. Most career drivers know darn good and well when there tired and when to park and sleep, but now you cant park when your tired, and there are time limits on parking, and DOT, and LEO are going into rest areas and waking drivers for Inspections DURING there rest breaks….Common Sense is slipping under the bus of LOBBYS who have influenced the Legislature and brought about pick pocketting of Hard working men and women who know this business BETTER then ANY lawmakers committee. Truckers need to force the election of a Trucker Friendly transportation chairman who has the Balls to stand up against PAID FOR Lobbys and laws that only serve to benefit the companys who want to MANDATE the use of there products.

Why is the cop in this picture wearing his patolman clothes to do a greasy job like inspecting a truck..what is the Gun for? Looks purdy stupid….What does a patrolman know about mechanichs of Semi Trucks?? What a jackass…looks like Hitlers Brown Shirts…..what is he doing under there? Treating truckers like they are in San Quentin? What a JERK!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1623800110 Donald Rouselle

I read alot about the trucking industry and the drivers, etc. I hear alot about HOS, working conditions, etc. Just one question y’all. If it sucks so bad “out there” why the hell are you all still driving for a living? All i’m hearing is alot of bitching, complaining, and crying in your coffee!!! Do something else with your life if it sucks that bad! WTF!!! I, for one would love to drive a big rig, but now that i have sleep apnea, that dream is over for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

AGREED…..Lots of guys have LEFT TRUCKING since it has become a rediculous JOKE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

AGREED…smart to leave trucking…everyone on this comment section is PISSED OFF! The industry has become a NIGHTMARE….as if it already wasn’t an undesireable P.O.S. CSA COPS are the Last Straw to an already crappy low paid industry….hassling all these working people…..AND taking their MONEY….they couldnt do that on a construction site……

  • martymarsh

Look, why don’t these idiots just say you can only work 8 hours a day and get it over with. You can’t regulate rest, but they will keep trying as long as there is a dollar in it.

  • martymarsh

Hey Mike, who are you a dispatcher for? Also how long are McDonalds employees away from home?

  • martymarsh

    Right on the money.

  • martymarsh

All I can say to that is, you have to be there, just because you want it does not make it pretty.

  • martymarsh

After 39 years I still laugh every time I hear that one, you can’t get 2 people to agree today is Sunday, and it is. I can’t tell you how many times I tried to do this, and I’m still talking to myself.

  • Able

As said many time prior,we need to All unite and sit still.. And I do mean ALL, every1 leave their personal feelings about other races at home and Unite as 1… This is governments greatest fear because we are Americas back bone in several ways and strength.. There wouldnt be a need of violence or any form of aggression, this wouldnt be a long dragged out proccess… For those worried about losing their jobs or contracts would have NO worries cause the freight back up would increase business oppotunities, companies will need drivers greatly afterwards hoping to please customers as well as make a large amount of money.. THIS IS NECCESSARY FOR THEM TO LISTEN TO US, ALL OF US… To see us Unite as 1 although we’re a industry of multiculture… AS WELL THE 4WHEELER WILL LEARN the importance of us, the neccessity of us and give us the respect and right away we deserve, need, and have the rights too.. Unlike the Canadian/Mexican countries shutdown ours would be felt and recognized across the world, Any president and congress would have to answer to, with pressure from ABROAD… I LOVE TRUCKING… I LOVE SERVING MY COUNTRY

  • SHADOW

SO it seems pretty much everyone is pissed off. WHAT do you want to do about it ? YOU want to shut down for 2,3 or 4 days ? YOU want someone to lead ? WELL LETS GET OFF OUR ASSES AND START THE BALL ROLLING AND THE TIRES SITTING IN A SHUTDOWN. What demands do we want ? This has to be worked out for this to work. Its not going to do any good parking if we don’t have a list of demands. Hos change ? FMCSA and CSA put on lease ? Harrassment stopped ? Being able to stop in a rest area and not worring about a inspection ? More and bigger rest areas built and the old ones opened back up and service areas open so we don’t have to park on ramps as more no parking signs are being put on theses ? What else ? What about the days ? July 1st,2nd and 3rd when the summer season hits its first big holiday ? What if mom and dad don’t have gas to get to the store to pick up hamburgs for grandmas house ? OR the baby doesn’t have enough milk to get through the shutdown ? OR the store is out of diapers and wearing a washed out one ? OR the railroad doesn’t have enough freight to load to run and what they do have is spoiling on the trackside ? OR the ships sitting out at sea are waiting to unload costing the goverment money ? OR the grains and things waiting to be sent out spoiling ?OR the factories waiting for raw material and then getting thier product out ? OR the Walmart emploees (the largest employe)r has sent workers home because of no inventory and no one has gas to get to work or to the store anyways ? OR In the big citys with small corner stores closing down because of no grocries cause people to steal more or rush stores (just like before a big SANDY) ? LETS GET UP OFF OUR ASSES AND OPEN THE DOOR AND GET OUT AND SHUT DOWN FOR 3-4 DAYS. WHAT IS THERE TO LOOSE ?????? AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE TO SEE THAT WE, THE TRUCK DRIVER, RUN THIS COUNTRY AND ARE SICK OF BEING THROWN UNDER THE WHEELS. THEY WILL WAKE UP !!!

  • Moving ON

I gave it up TODAY! mailed plates back with final log page. Enough is enough! I can make more cutting grass three days a week and stay home. (BTW, no tickets, no crashes, not a single mark on CSA, HAZMAT, TWIX and stll can not make money)

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

Hey wiseguy, I’m a truck driver of 20 years, next question?

  • martymarsh

You answered part of it, but everytime I hear a guy say something like quit crying or whining, they are usually a dispatcher or a company butt kisser. If you are so happy and want to put up with what these clowns wants to feed you that is fine.I have been doing this for 39 years and let me tell you, you are losing your freedom and you don’t even know it. So again, if your happy just don’t stand in the way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

well its a fantasy anyway…you are MUCH better off than this industry…stay at home and builda Real Life like Most men do….not this rediculous job….it has Suddenly come to the breaking point…..this is why the waves of pissed off drivers…..You are missing nothing but a multitude of wasted time. Develop a Real career….this one is Finished..alot of the guys on here will be out of trucking soon……..You are actually quite fortunate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

agreed…sucking it up is not the answer….it has steadily gotten worse….soon they will have an ilegal alien in every truck..preferably a Team…and a Dash Camera pointed at him 24/7…….see now 20years ago like this guy started..they had just gone to “CDL”..and Satelite monitoring…….some of these guys are not aware of the changes that are taking place..to the point of Total Dominance..which is what the Rich man and the Cops are determined to have over truckers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

Congradulations! You Have Seen The Light…….the industry has become a P.O.S. somany guys are running for the exits……..no use staying…….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

Yep its funny too Banning weigh station waves thru thousands of trucks and the driver cant even speak English….what CSA are they talking about? in every truck stop in calif it is loaded with Spanish Speaking Foreigners….nobody knows the drivers REAL NAME or work history or criminal background….the AMERICAN driver has to show PROOF of everything that cop wants to know..and he will run your record back 30 years looking for some outstanding warrant, ticket…You better be as pure as the driven snow……..the Alien? shucks he is free to go in 30 seconds.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1269137418 Mike Jones

Congradulations! It has become Unbearable…and rediculous to stay! Thousands of guys are Leaving and/or are Leaving and Why Not?

  • martymarsh

    Right on the money.

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

I do understand a lot of the complaints, I even have some, but they relate to LTL drivers being affected by recent FED/GOV laws/changes. As for “happy“, yeah, I am, I am painfully employed and loving it ;) (I usually just don’t gripe/whine too much, and go with the flow, there are a hell of a lot worse jobs out there! LOL)

  • martymarsh

So you are an LTL driver, with who? Because that is saying it all.

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

There you go again, jumping the gun. I drive OTR LTL. I also have experience with 2 other companies in the past that were also OTR, but not LTL companies. I know what the F I’m talking about, I KNOW what a “Trucker” does, and goes through, are you satisfied NOW?!?!?!?!? Will you get OFF your high horse?

  • martymarsh

What high horse, your the one that basicly said sit down shut up and do what your told. Your either with or against or you want to mind your own business. Then you always have the option of not answering. The way I figure it, is if you write something your looking for a response, I know I was.

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

No, no, no……I THINK your interpreting, or taking my words out of context, I am against WHINING, period! Constructive discussions/criticism are a whole different game! I am so sick of listening to whiners in the USA, that for the most part, have NO CLUE how good they have it, despite their warp of reality. Have any of you ever left the USA and seen the world? We GOT IT GOOD here in good ‘ole USA! I PROMISE!

Yes, some of the laws change and are hard to swallow, hard to implement, hard to get used to, BUT, first and foremost, a happy driver will usually adjust! No just trucking either, most employees that are happy with their job, will groan, but keep working and appreciate what they have, ESPECIALLY in this day and age, or “post 9/11″ world. I suggest that ANYONE that wants to contest what I am saying about GREAT pay in the trucking world, visit payscale.com, seriously!

OK, back to the “main” point(s) here. I have been driving just about 20 years, this May will be 20. Granted, it’s not as long as a lot of other drivers, but it’s more than most. I have a VERY well rounded experience in the freight world. I started at 18 loading trucks in Long Beach California, then joined the US Navy, as a Boatswainmate, served in the Seamanship & Rigging world (3 Ships, 9+ years ACTIVE service!), but also handled freight there too. You ever spend 12 hours on a Burton Rig transferring freight, and also being in/on a “working party” to get those stores and freight below? VERY long day, even a lumper would think twice about!

I have spent the last 17 years in LTL, almost 5 of which is OTR, the previous dock/P&D/Line. Let me PROMISE you, an experienced LTL driver will out work a OTR driver almost EVERY time! An OTR driver just drives, but LTL drivers deliver 15-30 PALLETIZED loads EVERY day in city traffic and does it safely (then still goes back and works the dock for a few hours!!!!)! LTL line drivers have tighter schedules than MOST OTR drivers! I have done BOTH, and am PROUD as hell to tell you that all together/total, My Navy time, and Trucking time, is MUCH more valuable as a whole than 90% of the OTR drivers work experience, I PROMISE!

EVERY job changes, ALL rules change, either by the front office, or by “progress”. You “Senior” drivers should NOT need me to explain this! But yet, it’s always the “prima donna’s” that cry the loudest, which ironically are almost always “Senior Drivers”. Is this what you guys tell your kids, to QUIT when the going gets tough? The Human can adapt, overcome, and improvise/change better than any creature, yet we cry the loudest too.

Be pissed off, write your Congress person, have discussion groups, but for FUCKS SAKE stop crying, and bringing down the new guys and the almost new guys! The world is NOT collapsing Chicken Little, it’s just getting a little harder to earn that GREAT paycheck!

On a last note, I got REALLY tired of a sleeper, I didn’t cry, I did my research, quit regular OTR driving and moved on to $GREENER pastures, LTL world! (I drive a daycab OTR now! Can you say MOTEL?) Don’t cry to me because you stayed with Swift, or JB for 30 years! LOL ;)

The bottom line? ALL Americans need to do some reflecting, reorganizing, and weighing, of priorities, careers, and much more! Do you think things will get “better” with our GOV????? That’s right, they WON’T! I don’t know about you, but I have been busting my ass for 35 years, I just turned 50 a day ago, and I just can’t take on the GOV, the world, or even you. I am happy with my life, despite my flaws, WHY AREN’T YOU?!??!?!?!?!

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

“….it has Suddenly come to the breaking point” Really? Just happened over night huh? How long have you been driving?????

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

“I can make more cutting grass three days a week and stay home.” Good luck with that! ;)

  • martymarsh

Now I know why you said what you did at the start, because you are a go with the flow kind of guy, so go with it. Nothing ever changes unless it is talked about somewhere to start. Also being an LTL driver you make alot more than alot of over the road drivers, I know I have been there also. You think I lasted in this business for 39 years with my attitude driving for JB Hunt? You are probably a teamster to boot.

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

    sigh……Nope, NOT union, EVER!

  • martymarsh

Yes actually you do, but party on and have a good life.

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

LOLOLOLOLOLOL Shows how much you DON’T KNOW!!!! :)

  • Jimmy the Greek

I checked out that CSA website , and i can tell you that i have never in my life seen bullshit like what was there , I am glad i well only be out here 5 more years max , I run on my own authority and haul fuel additives to the refinery to treat the cargo some time i go to the launch services and they carry the tote tanks out to the ships , i only run forty seven thousand miles in 2012 and still made a bunch of money pulling a dry van and get paid to what for the empties by the hour 12 to eighty hours , that is how long it takes sometime however this crap out here is getting so bad that i don’t know any one well be able to do this job in 10 years .

  • John Nettles Sr.

MARTY I remember starting out back in the seventies before power steering, and the fights are still the same except we made money back then,I always made great money always had insurance and a retirement plan but we still would get into our pissing matches,I am so glad i am retired because these guys are nothing but steering wheel holders, and couldn’t think if they had to

  • John Nettles Sr.

Sleep Apnea doesn’t put you out of a truck! Or did you tell them you had it?And if it did put you out of the truck when did they change that?

  • John Nettles Sr.

I was their in the 70s for that strike and the 80s and in the 90s and it didn’t fix shit!,this time it’s going to take more than a week and violence and a lot of it!! Peaceful demonstrations have never worked, and never have it always takes violence for or government to pay attention and the public to pay attention I know it’s a hell of a statement but the blacks have always had that right, violence is the only way,no wonder the government want’s to take your guns away, their scared now because the police will start coming home in boxes!
