I-64 bridge closed near Louisville

Sherman Bridge OdThe I-64 Sherman Minton Bridge over the Ohio River between Indiana and Kentucky near Louisville was closed Sept. 9 indefinitely after discovery of cracks in the steel structure.

Indiana and Kentucky transportation officials were informed of the discovery of cracks in the bridge on Sept. 8. Structural engineers from the state and private sectors, as well as from engineering universities, recommended closing the 50-year-old bridge after examining the data.

Transportation officials were reported saying it could take up to three weeks to inspect the bridge for further damage. The bridge closure could last several months.

Traffic is being detoured over I-265 and I-65. The Indiana Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Federal Highway Administration, announced it will develop a traffic plan.
