Georgia’s Bureau of Investigation is looking in to an incident where police shot the tires of a trucker after they say ignored orders to stop for unsafe driving and instead pointed his truck at them.
The Fulton County District Attorney will decide if action is necessary following the bureau’s investigation, requested by College Park Police Feb. 20. Four officers witnessed a tractor-trailer driving unsafely on Old National Highway in the Atlanta suburb. When they verbally commanded him to stop, he pointed his truck at the officers, who responded by shooting his tires and engine, police said.
The driver, Yahya Nalm Shakur, was not shot and no officers were injured during the incident. Police used a Taser on the 46-year-old driver when he was uncooperative with attempts to extract him from the truck.
Shakur was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless conduct, reckless driving and obstruction. He also was charged with the Georgia law of driving under the influence less safe. This is when an officer believes a driver is operating less safely because of alcohol use, even if blood alcohol content is below the legal limit. This charge also applies to motorists who refuse breath, urine or blood tests.
