Is this the truck of the future?

As a follow up to its July introduction of the world’s first self-driving truck, Daimler pulled the curtain back Sept. 23 on what it’s dubbed the Future Truck 2025: A revolutionary cabover that blends technology, aerodynamics and design in a way unlike any truck has done before.

Daimler, manufacturer of Freightliner, Western Star and Detroit, introduced the Mercedes Benz Future Truck 2025 at IAA 2014 in Hanover, Germany, in front of about 350 journalists from around the world.

And this isn’t your cabover of yesteryear. The truck doesn’t have any headlights nor side mirrors, replacing the former with a panel of LEDs that shine through the truck’s grille and the latter with “mirror cameras” that display the tractor-trailer’s surroundings on a 12-inch screen inside the cab.

“Our Future Truck 2025 provides compelling answers to the challenges that our customers will be facing in the future,” said Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler Board Member for Trucks and Buses. “Our aim is to press forward with readying this technology for the market and to bring it to series-production standard. I am convinced that this will open up a whole new business perspective for Daimler Trucks.”
