Smithway closes skipper deal
Smithway Motor Xpress, Fort Dodge, Iowa, acquired certain trucking assets of Skipper Transportation, Birmingham, Ala. Skipper operated approx-imately 39 leased company tractors, 85 owner-operators and 160 trailers.



Viking expands center
Viking Freight, San Jose, Calif., expanded its service center in Reno to increase freight capacity. Viking provides one- to two-day delivery to West Coast markets.



Department of Defense salutes Roadway Express
Roadway Express, Akron, Ohio, received the 2000 Military Traffic Management Command Quality Award from the Department of Defense for outstanding service.



Awards & Recognition
  • Dart Transit, Eagan, Minn., named Charles Bishop Contractor of the Year for 2000.
  • Driver Charles Hickman, Atlas Carriers, Searcy, Ark., received the Battalion Commander’s Award for Humanitarian efforts on behalf of the Army and the Highway Angel award on behalf of the Truckload Carriers Association.
  • Consolidated Freightways, El Paso, Texas, honored Larry Rundback for reaching 3 million accident-free miles. Rundback’s name will be placed on a special decal that will be affixed to both sides of the tractor portion of a line haul unit.
  • The American Moving and Storage Association named Kristopher Edney Super Van Operator of the Year for 2001.
  • Roehl Transport, Marshfield, Wis., recognized 23 drivers for exceptional service and outstanding safety standards. The awards were presented at the company’s Annual Service Awards Banquet.
  • Goodyear, Louisville, Ky., named David Zorn the 2000 Goodyear North America Highway Hero. Zorn rescued a police officer under attack on the side of the highway.
