Karl KruegerKarl Krueger of Sioux Falls, S.D., a 62-year-old union driver for Yellow Freight, passed away Feb. 16 at the scene of a five-truck crash near the end of a construction zone on Interstate 29 in western Iowa, the Associated Press reported.
Iowa State Patrol officials said trucks had come to a stop in the right southbound lane of I-29 for an unknown reason. The truck driven by Krueger hit the back end of one of the trucks, causing a chain reaction.
Krueger is known among truckers for a run he made for the presidency of the United States, beginning in 2007. He ran on a platform of “eliminating America’s use of foreign oil and pushing alternative fuels – batteries, ethanol and biodiesel – to the forefront of American transport,” as reported by former Overdrive Managing Editor Steven Mackay when Krueger announced his run at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., that year.
An honorary Kentucky Colonel who taught combat at Fort Knox, Krueger also served 13 years in the U.S. Army, with three tours in Vietnam. According to an obituary in the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader, he is survived by his mother, Lucy; brothers and sisters Steve, Tom, Susan Kast, and Daniel; his daughter, Wendy Bernett; a step-daughter, Svitlana; 5 nephews; 5 nieces; 2 great nieces; and 7 great nephews.
