Life makes sense out on the road

Updated Feb 28, 2012

I learned today more about the expedited freight transport industry. Learned by interviewing the CEO and the president of a large expedite carrier.

Diane and I woke up this morning in our Florida vacation house where we have been since early January. We will be back on the road soon.

One of the things I need to finish up before we leave is an article I have been working on. It is very interesting work but also takes a great deal of time. It takes just a half-hour to interview someone but much longer than that to transcribe the tape, figure out what I want to use and what to leave out, and weave the quotes into the larger story. I envy professional writers who have developed the skills to be good at and efficient in this kind of work.

I do not consider myself to be a good writer but some people do and they have given me opportunities to write pieces for trucking magazines. There is no money in it to speak of but I do it because it is a great way to learn. It gives me access to people I would not otherwise have. It provides answers to questions I could not otherwise get easily answered. And it is a service to others. I enjoy getting and putting into print the answers to questions my fellow expediters have. But it takes time, lots of time, and I have put in too much now.

Diane and I need to get back on the road and I need to re-establish a balance. This is the first time in my life that I have taken an extended vacation. It started great but I messed it up later on by filling it with multiple projects. Life makes sense out on the road. Once we get back out there I’ll be looking back on these two months to figure out where I went right and wrong and how I did it.
