Paul Marhoefer’s 2015 Trucker Talent Search entry above put him in the running for the big win, to be determined in a performance at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas later this month. He’s looking forward to the “good time” to be had for both performer and audience there, among the top goals of any performing musician, as he sees it.

Marhoefer’s musical influences are varied, but he traces the musical mode in which he’s most at home back to the legacy of Townes Van Zandt and the creative influence the singer-songwriter had on the subsequent generation of performers, people like Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and others.

Marhoefer, 55, of Indiana, talked at length about these influences and his long trucking career in the interview with Red Eye Radio’s Eric Harley you’ll find in the podcast below. You can also check it out at the head of Overdrive’s curated “Music to truck by” SoundCloud playlist at bottom.

In the on-site theater at GATS August 28, 3:30 p.m., Marhoefer as well as fellow finalists Nate Moran and Don Whatley will perform before a panel of judges to determine the ultimate winner of the search Overdrive/Red Eye Radio competition. Singer-songwriter and driver Tony Justice will emcee the event and also perform.  Interviews with Whatley and Moran will follow next week.
