Maverick Acquisition

Maverick Transportation Inc. has announced the acquisition of Parrett Trucking Inc. of Scottsboro, Ala. Parrett, operating 140 tractors, is primarily an owner-operator company and will be operated separately under the name Parrett Trucking, LLC. Mike Parrett, president and founder, will serve as president of the new company.


Sitton Honors Drivers
Sitton Motor Lines recently named David Tackitt of Annapolis, Mo., as its 2003 Driver of the Year Award winner.

Tackitt has been a company driver for Sitton since October of 2001 and was also the company’s July 2003 Driver of the Month. As a special reward for his honors, Tackitt was assigned a special 2004 Freightliner with custom lettering and received a U.S. Savings Bond, in addition to a personalized embroidered jacket, an engraved plaque to take home and another that was placed on the company’s Wall of Fame.

Also honored were first runner-up Anthony “Tony” Barnett of Crescent, Okla., and second runner-up Fred Guthrie of Independence, Mo. Barnett has been a Sitton company driver since July 1994 and was the company’s February 2003 and January 2000 Driver of the Month. Guthrie has been an owner-operator for Sitton since March 1997 and was named April 2003 and September 2000 Driver of the Month. Both men were rewarded with a U.S. Savings Bond, custom lettering on their trucks and a personalized embroidered jacket.

Sitton also honored the following drivers of the month for 2003: August: Ronald McConnell of Broken Arrow, Okla., 16-year company driver; September: Gary Sump of Corsicana, Texas, 11-year company driver; October: Dennis Bryant of Wewoka, Okla., three-year company driver; November: Rickey Lee of Joplin, Mo., 13-year owner-operator and December: Ernesto Ramos of Forest Hills, N.Y., one-year company driver.


Trucker Wins Seat Massager
Henry Good, a 20-year veteran driver from Monticello, N.Y., is the winner of a truck seat massager given away by Bee Sweet during the 2004 North American Truck Show.
Good’s 1981 Kenworth K100C truck, known as “Hank’s Highway Hilton,” has appeared in truck shows and tours throughout North America and Europe. It has won several awards and has been featured in the Cat Scale Super Trucks Series. The truck ran up 1 million miles before it was completely restored in 1998 and 1999.


Driver Earns Referral Prizes
Carl Puline, an independent contractor with Bay & Bay Transfer, was recently given a custom-made gold Bay & Bay watch for recruiting six new drivers and contractors to the company.

For every referral hired, the Bay & Bay driver or owner-operator receives $500. Two referrals is rewarded with a personalized wool and leather Bay & Bay sports jacket; four referrals earns the driver a XM satellite radio with one year of service; with six referrals the driver receives the gold watch; and eight referrals earns a 14-carat gold custom-designed Bay & Bay signet ring. Ten referrals gets the driver a round-trip ticket to Nashville, Tenn., or Washington, D.C., for a taping of XM radio’s Bill Mack, Dale Sommers or Dave Nemo’s Trucking Radio shows plus two nights lodging.

Puline, who has been with Bay & Bay since June 20, 2003, has recruited his seventh driver and is now just one more recruitment away from the ring.


Wheaton Recognizes Top Drivers
Wheaton World Wide recently honored its Drivers of the Month for March and April.

Randy Mann of Indianapolis and Steve Moskowitz, who drives for North County Moving and Storage, Escondido, Calif., earned Driver of the Month awards in the permanent fleet for March. Mann has a total of 18 years of service with Wheaton and has driven more than 1 million miles under the carrier’s safe mileage program. Moskowitz, a seven-time recipient of the award, has logged more than 810,000 safe miles since qualifying with Wheaton in 1988. Terry Marion with Smoky Mountain Moving Service in Sevierville, Tenn., and Johnny Shelton, from Crown Moving and Storage, Indianapolis, were chosen as Drivers of the Month in March. Marion became a Wheaton driver in 1999 and has now been honored as a Driver of the Month three times. Shelton has driven more than 48,000 safe miles since he qualified with Wheaton in 1999.

Andres Alvarado of Los Angeles and Jimmy Funkhouser of Indianapolis earned permanent fleet recognition as Wheaton Drivers of the Month in April. Since qualifying with Wheaton last year, Alvarado has completed more than 143,000 miles under the safe mileage program. He is now a two-time Driver of the Month recipient and was one of Wheaton’s Drivers of the Year in 2003. This is also Funkhouser’s second Driver of the Month award; he has driven more than 333,000 safe miles since becoming a Wheaton driver in 1998. Edward Wissell of Alabama We-Haul Movers in Huntsville, Ala., and Steve York with Preferred Moving and Storage in Clinton Township, Mich., were honored with the April Driver of the Month awards in the intermittent fleet. Wissell qualified with Wheaton in 2001 and has since logged more than 97,000 miles in the safe mileage program. York, who earned his first Driver of the Month citation in August 2003, has logged more than 127,000 safe miles since joining the company in 1996.


Star Drivers
Twenty-one Star Transportation drivers were honored in April with safe driving awards for their safety efforts.

Honored were William Clark, 20 years; Kennith Riggs, 13 years; Ben Brackett, 11 years; Jay Thompson, nine years; Vernon Jordan, six years; Rickie McFarland, six years; Richard Hill, five years; Clint Kennedy, four years; Jeffery Phillips, four years; Randy Leffingwell, three years; Jason Hess, two years; William Gibbs, two years; David Breeland, two years; Hiram Edwards, two years; Johnny Cates, two years; John Matthews, one year; Oscar McPherson, one year; Karl Brown, one year; Dominic Dundic, one year; Emory Longs, one year and Allen Hensley, one year.


Drivers of the Month
All Freight drivers Richard and Terri Rush of Barnett, Mo., were recognized by the Kansas Motor Carriers Association as its June 2003 Team Drivers of the Month.

The Rushes, who have been with All Freight for 18 years, normally run from Kansas City to the West Coast hauling a variety of freight. They received a plaque and an engraved collector’s edition tractor-trailer miniature.


Boat Winner
Recruiting drivers paid off in a big way for Maverick driver Tommy Payne, as he was recently presented with a brand new flat bottom boat, motor and trailer. The giveaway was part of Maverick’s annual referral program that recognizes and rewards Maverick drivers for the their referral efforts. Payne won the boat for referring the most drivers hired during the three-month month period of February, March and April.

Payne, a resident of South Roxana, Ill., has driven for Maverick for more than 11 years.
