Dear Carolyn,
This election reminds me of why I dread Thanksgiving. Half of my family is hard core Republican and the other half are liberal Democrats. In fact, my new girlfriend is a bleeding heart liberal and I’m an unashamed, flag-waving, gun-toting, Rush-loving Republican. We agree to disagree and so far, it’s worked out well. But come Turkey Day, I’m afraid she will gang up with the loud mouth libs of the family and I will be forced to show my ugly side.
It seems to me that things have grown more bitter now than ever before. I’m writing this on Election Day so I don’t know how it’s going to turn out.
No matter who wins, one half of the table will be mad. I’d like to make a good impression on my girlfriend but this is a family tradition.
Any suggestions?

Let’s talk turkey. Have you guys considered a drinking game? Everyone time someone yells, everyone has to forfeit their drink? I mean really. Just because the country can’t get along doesn’t mean you can’t broker a truce for one day.
However, methinks your family, like mine, enjoys the conflict. Make sure you set some ground rules:
No throwing (china, turkey, stuffing, pie or beer)
No hitting (children, babies, grandparents, self)
No pouting
No leaving before the dishes are done
No taking it personally
