Mobil Delvac releases low-viscosity oil aimed at increasing fuel economy, sustainability

Updated May 7, 2013

Low-viscosity engine oil — as profiled in October by Overdrive equipment editor Jack Roberts — will be one of the key components used by diesel engines to meet the soon-to-be-implemented federal greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards, set to be phased in starting next year through 2017.

To that end, Mobil Delvac has expanded its diesel engine oil line to include a low-viscosity synthetic oil, Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 which has been formulated to help owner-operators save fuel, reduce total maintenance costs and achieve various sustainability-related goals.

ExxonMobil application engineer C.G Hurtado says the fuel economy potential of the new low-viscosity oil has been validated by a number of controlled fuel economy tests across a spectrum of conditions and vehicles makes. Along with enhanced fuel economy, the oil is formulated to protect modern emissions systems and perform well at low temperatures, relative to higher-viscosity oils, says Hurtado.

“Our goal was to deliver a low-viscosity heavy-duty diesel engine oil that can provide the optimum viscosity at every operating condition to minimize overall engine friction and reduce fuel consumption,” Hurtado says. “With the state-of-the-art technology incorporated into this product, we’ve been able to achieve that goal and introduce a low-viscosity oil that delivers valuable fuel economy benefits without compromising engine or component protection.”

Hurtado says he fully expects engine manufacturers to explore synthetic low-viscosity oils like Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 as potential recommendations within the next several years, especially as more and more customers turn to them in lieu of conventional oil options.
