The national average diesel price jumped 9.1 cents in the latest week, with sharp increases hitting the West Coast, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information.

It was the seventh increase in the last eight weeks, during which the diesel price has risen 26.8 cents. The latest price rocketed past $4 a gallon to $4.051. A year ago it was 33.5 cents higher.

On the West Coast, prices soared, in part due to the aftermath of a Feb. 18 fire at a fuel refinery in Washington state that processes Alaskan crude oil. The entire West Coast increased 16.2 cents to an average $4.326, while the rise was 17.3 cents to $4.227 in Washington and Oregon. California gained 15.2 cents to $4.41. The price spiked 10.6 cents to $3.992 on the Gulf Coast.

The record diesel price was $4.764 in July 2008.
